Orlando International Airport

We have seen a few changes in the travel industry this year. From Real IDs needed for TSA to the shoes on policy change, it might feel hard to keep up with the latest policies when flying. Southwest Airlines is set to make a big change on January 27th, 2026. It is finally rolling out assigned seating for the very first time. For decades, the airline has been known for its “open seating” policy, where passengers boarded in groups and chose any available seat. While many travelers will welcome the peace of mind knowing their seat before boarding, the transition is expected to come with growing pains, especially at busy hubs like Orlando International Airport. With Orlando already one of the most traveled airports in the country, a major policy shift like this could create confusion and delays.

The challenge lies in the fact that thousands of travelers, including both frequent flyers and first-time visitors, will be adjusting to the new system. Some may still expect the old “first-come, first-served” boarding process, while others will be unsure where to find their new seat assignments. Add in the large number of families, theme park visitors, and international travelers who pass through Orlando daily. The airport could quickly become a hot spot for misunderstandings, crowded gate areas, and even delayed departures.

If you’re flying Southwest out of Orlando on January 27th or the days following, a little preparation can help you avoid unnecessary stress. Make sure to check your boarding pass carefully for your seat assignment before heading to the gate. If you’re traveling with family, double-check that your group is seated together and make any necessary changes in advance through the Southwest app or website. Arriving a bit earlier than usual can also give you extra time to navigate any unexpected hiccups.

So why the change? Southwest explained that the airline conducted a research investigation and found that “80% of Southwest Customers, and 86% of potential customers, prefer an assigned seat.” So while it might take time to adjust to this change, it seems like it could be a benefit for many flyers.
