Disney Announces Plans to Solve an EPCOT Ride Problem…and It Backfired

Disney just made a major change to one of the resort’s most popular rides in hopes of fixing a controversial issue… and may have actually just made the issue WORSE!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Since its opening back in 2022, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has been one of the most popular rides not just at Disney World, but in the country! In fact, since the ride shifted from a virtual queue to a standby line in 2025, making it available to any guest willing to wait, it has often had the highest average wait of any attraction at the resort’s four theme parks, with times often over an hour each week. However, the ride had an issue… in its queue.

During the ride’s pre-show, a video featuring Centurion Tal Mark (played by actor Terry Crews) would play. In the clip, the character was stumped as to the name of the people who live in EPCOT, name-dropping EPCOT-ians, Citizens of EPCOT, etc. Crews’ character asks someone off camera, “Does anyone know what they call themselves?” which was followed by a pause. During said pause, guests in the room would yell out answers like “alcoholics” or “drunks” in reference to people who choose to Drink Around the World.

Some guests found the bit amusing, while others would groan at hearing the same “joke” over and over again, especially those put off by the subject matter not feeling very… on brand for Disney World. Things weren’t helped by the fact that the Cosmic Rewind queue is overall somewhat unpopular among fans thanks to its layout.

For years, Disney left the moment alone… until October of 2026, that is! With no announcement, guests noticed a new edit of the queue video that used a quick cut to lessen the pause considerably as a way to try and discourage the yelling. However, we’d argue Disney’s move may have backfired! For starters, there’s still enough time for people to yell out even with the new edit.

Beyond that move, which went a bit viral amongst theme park and Disney aficionado social media, it likely brought more attention to the act of yelling out than it had received in the last four years combined, arguably making Disney’s change an example of the so-called “Streisand Effect.”
