U.S. Department of State Issues Level 2 Travel Advisory for a Popular Cruise Destination
Are you planning a cruise?
Cruising has become even more popular than ever, and cruise lines are betting BIG on new cruise ships (including Disney Cruise Line, which recently announcing it’s expanding its fleet with four MORE ships). Island destinations are popular with cruisers, and other vacationers, too, but if you’re planning on visiting Turks and Caicos Islands, we’ve got a warning: the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory for that destination.
The new Level 2 travel advisory was issued on March 4th, 2025, for Turks and Caicos Island. Level 2 means that travelers visiting this destination need to “Exercise increased caution in the Turks and Caicos Islands due to crime.” The travel advisory summary states:
“Most crime occurs in Providenciales. Police may have limited investigatory resources. U.S. Embassy Nassau, located in The Bahamas, provides consular services (including assistance to victims of crime) for U.S. citizens in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
Turks and Caicos is a popular cruise port and is visited by many major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and more. Grand Turk, in particular, is often part of Eastern Caribbean cruise itineraries.
The advisory also notes that law enforcement resources are limited in the country. The U.S. Embassy in Nassau, Bahamas, provides services for American citizens in Turks and Caicos. Visitors are also encouraged to avoid walking alone at night, do not answer the door at a hotel or residence until they know who it is, and not resist any robbery attempts.

The advisory also updated its warning to travelers about the country’s strict firearms laws, which could result in severe penalties for visitors. Something as small as a single bullet could result in immediate arrest and a potential jail sentence of 12 years or more. According to the advisory, “Some U.S. citizens have been detained and unable to depart for several weeks or more after being found with bullets in their luggage. Offenders can face 12 years or more in prison. Though the law allows for some exceptions and discretion, the Department of State cannot guarantee your release.”
