The Problem with the NEW Closure of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Disney’s about to make some significant changes to Hollywood Studios!
A new Villains stage show that’s replacing Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, a new version of The Little Mermaid stage show in Animation Courtyard, and of course, the brand-new Monsters, Inc.-inspired land that’s taking over Muppets Courtyard are all on the calendar. But what about the updates to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster? We foresee a bit of a problem there!
In case you missed it, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in its current form will be closing and then reopening with a new ride theme — the Muppets! That’s right, they’re moving from Grand Avenue across the park to Sunset Boulevard, and they’ll be rocking out on the new version of the ride with some of “music’s biggest stars.”
We can’t wait to see what this ride retheme will be like when it opens, but before that happens, we’ll have to endure Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster being closed AGAIN. The ride has already been through a few lengthy refurbishments in recent years, and based on those closures, we think there’s going to be a problem with it closing again.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is a pretty popular ride, with wait times often settled around an hour at any point in the day. Because of this, the ride is absorbing a fair number of people from out in the park — meaning that if those people are in line for the coaster, they’re not in line for other attractions, crowding the walkways, filling the gift shops, or taking up space in the restaurants.
So whenever a ride is closed, all the people who would’ve been in line for that ride end up in other spots around the park. It typically increases wait times for the other attractions around the park and can make the park walkways feel a little bit more crowded in general.
The problem with the crowds may be extra strong as well, considering Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy is currently closed to make way for a new Disney Villains stage show — so if Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster closes before the new show opens this summer, there will be pretty much no reason to go back to that section of the park.
And adding on to the subject of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster’s popularity, having the ride closed for an extended amount of time means that purchasing Lightning Lane Premier Pass or Multi Pass for Hollywood Studios loses some of its value. You’ll get access to one fewer attraction and the other Lightning Lanes will be a smidge harder to book when using Multi Pass just because there are less options overall.
So ultimately, there are some issues with closing this coaster for an extended period of time, especially without something new to open in its place. We’ll be interested to learn more about its closure in the future, so stay tuned to DFB for all the details as they’re released.
