WARNING: A New Virtual Queue Is About To Hit Disney World, But Not How You Think
We’re grabbing our sketch pads and pencils and heading straight to Hollywood Studios because The Magic of Disney Animation is almost open!
This new area of Walt Disney Studios has so much fun happening, including drawing classes with Olaf, tons of meet-and-greets, a new indoor (and air-conditioned!) playground, and just overall animation fun. With all the new experiences officially opening to the public on September 14th, something else is also coming to Hollywood Studios — a brand-new virtual queue system for the attraction!
We spoke with a Cast Member who confirmed that a virtual queue will be in place, specifically for busier days, and we’ll probably see it on the attraction’s official opening day. The virtual queue also won’t be through the My Disney Experience app. You’ll give your phone number to a Cast Member in The Magic of Disney Animation, and you’ll receive a text when you can enter.
That means your morning will require a little extra planning before you head over to experience the attraction. The standby queue will not be available, so you won’t be able to physically wait in line. Even with the virtual queue, you typically have to wait a bit before it’s your turn, so don’t expect to avoid all the lines.
We see virtual queues for almost every Disney World opening since they help manage long lines for the most popular attractions (aka brand-new attractions!). Bluey’s Wild World, which opened in Animal Kingdom earlier this year, used a virtual queue but stopped shortly after, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets used it for Annual Passholder previews.
Recently, Disney has been adding virtual queues for only a few days or in select situations, rather than for months or years like they did for TRON Lightcycle / Run and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT, and Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios.
Virtual queues are a bit controversial amongst guests. Some don’t find it difficult to join queues and feel it helps manage lines and wait times, but others think it adds unnecessary complication and would prefer waiting in the standby queue for hours at a time.
Either way, a virtual queue is back at Disney World, and if you want to experience the full Magic of Disney Animation, you’ll want to make sure you know how it works and how to join.
