We’ve Never Been More Excited About Giant Balloons in Disney World
Disney World has dozens of construction projects happening right now, but some of the largest ones are happening across the parks.

EPCOT is currently the only park not with a massive land addition in the works, and Magic Kingdom has TWO new lands in the works as we speak. One of those lands is Piston Peak, the new Cars-themed area on the way, and Disney just took a big step forward in planning for construction, though it may not look like it. Why? Well, because it just looked like giant balloons in the air, but they were VERY important.
This is called the balloon test, and Disney just recently released a whole video telling us about it and why it’s important. In short, Disney put multiple massive balloons into the air at the height that certain new parts of Piston Peak will be, such as the snow-capped mountain, parts of the ride, and certain buildings. Then, Imagineers spread out all over the park (and potentially over the whole resort, since you can see Magic Kingdom from certain hotel floors and restaurants) to see how the balloons looked from those angles.
It was also their job to look at the concept art and remember what part of the land would be where each balloon was, and think about how it’ll blend in with the land around it. For example, will the snow-capped mountain block views of Cinderella Castle from the land, or other areas of the park, and will it blend in with Cinderella Castle’s recent lighter paint job from afar? How about some of the new buildings — will they blend in with the rest of Frontierland, and even Haunted Mansion since it’s gotten a paint job? Yes, Imagineers have to think about all of this BEFORE the construction actually begins.

Yes, this also very likely means that balloon tests are completed for lots of major new land additions, such as Villains Land (though that one may not have happened yet) and Galaxy’s Edge. Ever noticed how seamlessly lands sometimes turn into one another, or how it’s hard to see Disney’s Contemporary Resort from certain parts of Magic Kingdom? It’s part of the planning process, and we love hearing about what happens behind the scenes.
