“Endless construction.” Disney Fans React to the Spaceship Earth Changes Announcement
Spaceship Earth is a ride and the icon of EPCOT, and now it’s finally going to get a long-awaited update.

Disney dropped a ton of news recently at D23 — from brand-new lands, ride updates, and more. One of those announcements was that Spaceship Earth would be receiving a refurbishment in the future. However, when the news broke, not all of the Disney fans were happy.
The Next Chapter Begins
During the “Horizons: A Carousel of Progress” panel at D23, Disney Imagineer Ali Rubinstein confirmed that Spaceship Earth is getting its first real update in nearly 20 years. The current version of the ride celebrates human communication, but the reimagined attraction will shift its focus to human connection, bringing the story into the present day and beyond. New magic is coming to every scene, and while the classic EPCOT spirit of the ride will stay intact, Disney says the way that story gets told is about to change.

That hesitation makes a lot of sense once you consider the timeline. Spaceship Earth actually closed for a refurbishment as recently as last fall, reopening in October 2025. But as we reported at the time, that refresh turned out to be far more modest than fans were hoping for — no new scenes, no updated narration, no story overhaul. It’s a big reason this new announcement is landing with a mix of excitement and skepticism rather than pure celebration.

Adding to that skepticism: this isn’t even the first time Disney has promised this exact kind of overhaul. Back at D23 in 2019, the company said Spaceship Earth would stay a journey through time but get new scenes, a new guide, and all-new narration centered on storytelling and shared human experience. Sound familiar? Six years later, it looks like that promise may finally be coming true, but plenty of fans aren’t ready to celebrate until they see it for themselves.

What Fans are Saying
Reader reactions have ranged from cautiously hopeful to downright weary. One commenter summed up the frustration many longtime EPCOT fans feel about the pace of updates across the park: “Didn’t they just refurb this? We are in perpetual shutdowns of rides phase. Endless construction.”
Others are firmly in the “if it ain’t broke” camp. “Leave it alone,” one fan wrote, reflecting a sentiment shared by Guests who love Spaceship Earth exactly as it is and worry that a reimagining could lose some of what makes the ride special. Then there’s the wait-and-see crowd, still recovering from years of big Disney announcements that took much longer than expected to materialize — or didn’t pan out quite as promised. “I will believe it when I see it, just like everything they have been announcing,” one reader commented.

Spaceship Earth
It’s a fair point. Disney didn’t share a timeline for when these Spaceship Earth changes will actually happen, and given the ride’s history of announced-but-delayed updates, it’s understandable that fans want to see concrete progress before getting too excited. Still, there’s plenty of reason for optimism here too. A refresh centered on human connection feels timely, and after two decades without a real overhaul, Spaceship Earth is due for some new magic.
