In Just ONE Month, This Magic Kingdom Attraction Changes FOREVER
Magic Kingdom is in the midst of quite a large overhaul — there are walls practically everywhere you look!
Over in Frontierland, Piston Peak is coming to life behind tall walls (though hop on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for a great look at what’s going on), and Villains Land is currently being built from the ground up behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. However, it was recently announced that ANOTHER big project is beginning in just one month, and it’ll change one attraction for good — this is your reminder that you’ve only got ONE more month to experience the current version of Carousel of Progress!
Carousel of Progress will close for a length refurbishment exactly a month from today, on July 6th, to make major changes to the attraction. The reason for the change is so the attraction continues to feel current, updated, and relatable for audiences today, and Imagineering is planning to do that by updating the music, fashion, technology, and experiences that helped shape history as it’s reflected in this family’s story.
We know that the new Act 1 will take place in the 1960s, which is when the attraction first opened at the 1964 World’s Fair. Then, it looked back at the last 60 years of history, and now it’ll still do the same, but now looking at the 1960s to now! We know that this first scene will take place in 1969, as the family gathers around the TV to watch the moon landing. The idea is to keep the “spirit of innovation and possibility that has always been — and always will be — at the heart of Carousel of Progress.”
Act 2 takes place in 1985. Sarah will take center stage (for the first time ever!) on Halloween night as she shares all about how the new appliances and gadgets of the time are making life easier for the whole family. While John is out on the porch handing candy out to trick-or-treaters, and don’t worry, Uncle Orville will still iconically complain about how there’s no privacy in the house!
Act 3 brings us to the close of the millennium as the family is getting ready to ring in the new year on New Year’s Eve 1999. The Internet is bringing John, Sarah, Jimmy, and Patty closer together, but Grandpa has already nodded off, so Grandma changes the TV over to wrestling when no one is looking. Finally, Act 4 features a future that could be possible. The family is in a home that’s out of this world, complete with a robot assisting with everyday tasks, space travel, and where extraordinary innovation has become part of life.
The beginning of the show will also feature an introduction by Walt Disney, which will be SUPER special. The attraction is expected to reopen sometime in 2027, though no more specific opening timeline has been released at this time.
