Why So Many Disney Fans Accidentally Sabotage Their First Hour in Magic Kingdom

For many Walt Disney World guests — especially the early birds — rope dropping the Magic Kingdom (AKA arriving at the park in time to enter as soon as it opens, literally as Cast Members drop the entry rope) is a major mission each trip.

Rope Drop crowds!

Now, the goals of rope dropping are to get into the park as quickly as possible and, in turn, get to some of the busiest attractions at the park before the crowds descend. Which brings us to the mistake that many attempted rope droppers make…

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

To explain said mistake, we first have to make a quick distinction between the aforementioned rope dropping and early entry. The former occurs when the park officially opens to the public for the day. The latter is a popular perk for guests staying at Walt Disney World hotels, which is a 30-minute period each morning when guests of Disney resorts and other select hotels can access each of the theme parks prior to the general public.

Early entry sign!

So in layman’s terms, if the Magic Kingdom opens to the public at 9:00 AM, hotel guests can begin entering the park and accessing certain attractions. As of early 2026, those attractions include:

  • “it’s a small world”
  • Astro Orbiter
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant
  • Mad Tea Party
  • Mickey’s PhilharMagic
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Prince Charming Regal Carrousel
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Space Mountain
  • The Barnstormer
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Tomorrowland Speedway
  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover
  • Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid
  • Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress

So, as you can see, Early Entry guests are funneled to Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Which means that those rope dropping the park and hoping to get to rides as quickly as possible would be making a mistake heading to either of those two lands, as they’re already going to be somewhat packed with hotel guests taking advantage of Early Entry.

“it’s a small world”

Instead, rope-dropping guests would be wise to head to Adventureland, Frontierland, and Liberty Square. There, they can try to jump on heavy-hitter attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Jungle Cruise, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and The Haunted Mansion before the Early Entry crowds make their way over to the eastern edge of the park.

If you find yourself planning to rope drop the Magic Kingdom this year without Early Entry access, make sure to remember that heading to the left is the right direction. Stay tuned to DFB for further Magic Kingdom tips.
