The Disney World Mistake You’ll Make in April 2026

April is one of the most popular times to visit Disney World, and that makes it one of the easiest times to get caught off guard.

Between spring break crowds, the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival, and a park’s calendar packed with activity, it’s tempting to just book your trip and figure out the rest later. But here’s the thing: several major attractions are either closed or just returning from lengthy refurbishments this month, and walking in without knowing that could completely derail your priorities. Before you finalize your plans, here’s what’s actually going on across the parks in April 2026.

Frontierland Is Going Through a Lot Right Now

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed since January 6th, 2025, and it’s still in the middle of a significant overhaul. Disney confirmed the attraction would be down through Spring 2026 for track replacement and other enhancements, which means guests visiting in early April may still find it sitting behind construction walls.

What makes this closure feel bigger than a typical refurbishment is everything happening around it. Disney is actively working on a Cars-themed land called Piston Peak in the Frontierland area, which involves major changes to the layout of the land itself, including filling in the Rivers of America. Frontierland is essentially in a years-long transformation period, so if your group has a sentimental attachment to that corner of Magic Kingdom, it’s worth setting expectations before you arrive.

Buzz Lightyear Is Back, But Barely

Here’s some good news with an asterisk attached. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has been closed since August 4th, 2025, and its scheduled reopening is April 8th, 2026. If you’re visiting during the first week of the month, it’ll still be dark.

But once it reopens, the ride is going to feel like a genuinely different experience. A new character named Buddy, developed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar, will appear in an all-new opening scene.

The ride vehicles are getting new color schemes inspired by Star Command, and they’ll feature onboard monitors with real-time scoring. The mounted blasters riders have used for decades are being swapped out for handheld versions with always-on lasers and haptic feedback so you actually know when you’ve hit a target.

The old static Z targets are also being replaced with interactive versions that light up on contact. If you’ve always found the scoring on this ride a little inconsistent, these upgrades are aimed directly at fixing that.

Hollywood Studios Lost a Coaster, and It’s Getting a Muppet Makeover

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith officially closed on March 2nd, 2026, so anyone visiting in April won’t find it running in its current form.

The structure isn’t going anywhere, though. Disney is converting the attraction into a Muppets-themed coaster with a target opening date sometime in Summer 2026.

The new storyline follows the Electric Mayhem band racing to make it to their biggest concert ever. Guests enter through a recording studio where the band is mid-rehearsal while a crew of penguins handles sound engineering. Scooter is coordinating the scramble, and riders join the high-speed dash through Los Angeles to get the band there in time.

Disney has also confirmed the new version will include a brand-new Muppet animatronic, which is a detail worth getting excited about. It’s a tight turnaround for Imagineers, but the Muppets integration is a move that’s been fan-requested for years.

The Mistake Most Guests Make Without Realizing It

The actual mistake isn’t showing up without knowing about one specific closure. It’s not building any flexibility into your itinerary to account for the fact that April 2026 is a month of significant transition across multiple parks.

If your trip plan leans heavily on Frontierland, Tomorrowland, or Hollywood Studios, and you haven’t double-checked what’s actually operating, you could arrive expecting a full day and find a patchwork of detours instead. The fix is simple: check refurbishment calendars before you finalize your park days, and build at least one backup option for any must-do attraction.

Disney’s parks are still absolutely worth visiting this month, and several of these changes are genuinely exciting upgrades. But knowing what’s closed versus what’s coming back is the difference between a smooth trip and a frustrating one.
