Multiple NEW Disney Pixar Movies in the Works, Including a Third ‘Monsters, Inc.’
If you’re like us, you likely remember the golden days of Pixar. Whether you got to head to the theater to see hits like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., or WALL-E in person, or you watched them on DVD at home (or love to watch them on streaming now), these stories are a large part of many of our childhoods.
While Pixar has continued to make some great films, they’ve had some ups and downs over the past few years. Now, we have a bit more insight as to why that may be. We also got confirmation that there are LOTS of new Pixar films in the works, including a third installment in the Monsters, Inc. franchise!
According to The Wall Street Journal, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter admitted that the reason the company is struggling to find its next highly profitable franchise, similar to Toy Story, may be largely due to him and his instruction. He admitted that in his early years of managing Pixar’s group of ambitious creators, he “probably overindexed on, ‘Do whatever you want.’”
Three of Docter’s first projects with Pixar were massive hits, and continue to be to this day — Cars, Ratatouille, and Toy Story. Current and former employees at Pixar stated that a large reason for the lack of a hit recently is that “the conflict-averse Docter encouraged new directors to make autobiographical movies that too many audience members struggled to connect with.” Following a few films that didn’t perform well in the box office, such as Elio, now Docter is changing his strategy. Now, he’s encouraging creators to go back to universally relatable concepts, like monsters in closets (Monsters, Inc.) and talking toys (Toy Story).
We know Toy Story 5 is on its way, coming to theaters on June 19th, and the article mentions the third Incredibles film we know is coming in 2028, as well as the second Coco film coming in 2029, but then there was a NEW piece of information that stood out to us. People familiar with the matter are reporting that a third Monsters, Inc. installment is on its way! We have no idea when this is planned for, but the idea is exciting nonetheless. If it’s true, it also makes even more sense why the Monsters, Inc. land is currently being built in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Pixar’s first-ever musical is also in the works and is to be directed by Domee Shi, who directed Turning Red. When asked about the film, Lindsey Collins, Pixar’s senior vice president of development, said, “One of the things that brought the initial group together here was a desire to rebel against the traditional Disney musical. This next generation grew up on Pixar, and they’re figuring out their version of rebellion.” Additionally, another film called Ono Ghost Market is in the works as well, though it hasn’t been publicly unveiled by the company yet. It was originally going to be a series, but will now be a movie “inspired by Asian myths about supernatural bazaars where the living and dead interact.”
Pixar’s newest release, Hoppers, appears to be doing well in theaters so far. Docter commented that, despite mounting financial pressures, he feels Pixar will remain useful to Disney and the world if they just go on making great movies, going on to say, “If we’re going to just crank crap out, let’s shut the doors. I’d rather die trying to make something that we genuinely believe in.”
