Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin has been closed for refurbishment for a long time, and we’re finally getting close to experiencing this ride with all new features!
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin
In August of 2025, Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin in Magic Kingdom closed to have a large refurbishment done. Disney has confirmed some of the changes that guests will see when the ride reopens this spring. Let’s go through all of the changes that are underway!
New Ride Vehicles With Real-Time Scoring
The iconic XP-37 star cruisers are getting a sleek new look inspired by Buzz Lightyear’s signature color palette. The updated vehicles won’t just look different, but they’ll function differently, too. Each cruiser will now feature built-in video monitors that display real-time scoring updates, making it easier than ever to track your progress throughout the mission. Galactic Heroes, it’s almost time!
Guests will also encounter an all-new character during their adventure. “Buddy,” a friendly robot, will appear in a new scene to help prepare recruits for their mission. This will also introduce riders to some of the attraction’s upgraded interactive target features before they officially begin their journey into deep space.
If you’ve ridden before, you likely remember aiming for the glowing “Z” targets scattered throughout the attraction. Previously, many of these targets were static, and you might have been left guessing whether your shots actually landed. That’s changing! The upgraded targets will now incorporate new technology that allows them to light up and visibly react when hit. No more second-guessing your aim because you’ll get instant feedback as you battle Zurg.
One of the biggest changes? Completely redesigned blasters. Instead of being mounted to the ride vehicle, the new blasters will be fully handheld, allowing for greater freedom of movement and improved aim. Each vehicle will feature two blasters, and they’ll come in two distinct colors. Even better, the blasters will include an always-on laser, making it easier to track your shots and make it easier to line up your next target.
The basic storyline remains the same, with a high-stakes space battle inspired by Toy Story 2. Buzz Lightyear’s notorious enemy, Emperor Zurg, is stealing batteries from unsuspecting toys to power a destructive new superweapon. As a Rookie Space Ranger, you’ll board your star cruiser and travel into the Gamma Quadrant, spinning 360 degrees as you aim at glowing “Z” targets with your blaster. Your mission? Defeat Zurg and his army of rogue robots before it’s too late. With enhanced scoring, upgraded targets, handheld blasters, and the addition of Buddy, the experience promises to feel more immersive and more competitive than ever before.
