You’ll Always Find Me at My Disney World Hotel at 2 PM — Here’s Why
The one thing that blows my mind is that when people plan a Disney World vacation, they’re not just paying for tickets to the theme parks, but they’re also paying for a hotel room that many folks rarely see, except maybe at night.
I’m not one of those people, though. Now, I have certainly done the parks from rope drop to park close, but when I do this, I feel like I’ve wasted money on a hotel room I’m barely seeing. Oh, and I’m usually in pain…and I’m exhausted. So instead of making myself do that, I almost ALWAYS leave the parks around 2 PM to take a break in my hotel room that I paid good money for.
I don’t just take a break, though. I go back to my hotel room, I crash out on the bed, and I take a nap. You see…I’m a napper. I need a little afternoon nap to keep going well into the night, or otherwise, I’m useless after 6 PM. This goes back to my early days of visiting Disney World, when everyone stressed the importance of the midday break. I took that advice to heart, and I’ve been doing it on every trip.
It’s not that my body gets tired around midday, but I’m also a little overloaded on sensory input by that time, too. Disney World is designed to get all your senses going, and it can be a lot when you’re exposed to it for hours on end. There’s a lot of noise, a lot of people, and just…well, a lot.
So around 2 PM, I’ll hop on that Disney World transportation and head back to the hotel. There, I’ll kick off my shoes and socks to let my feet breathe (because by then they’ll be tired, too) and then lie down on the bed, close my eyes, and enjoy some peace and quiet. That usually involves at least a 15-20 minute power nap (I’m kinda’ an expert at this kind of napping). When I wake up, I feel refreshed, my body feels a million times better, and I’m ready to go tackle the rest of the day.
I might rest a little bit longer, just to enjoy some time to my own thoughts, but in an hour or two, I’m firing on all cylinders and ready to go back to the parks. This gets me through the end of the day, so I don’t feel awful by the time Happily Ever After starts. Instead, I’m “ready to begin.” (Yep, I went there.)
This is also a strategy I’ve put into practice when I’m doing other kinds of travel. I try to find a point in the day where I can get back to my hotel room for a break and a quick nap. This gives me the energy to keep going throughout the whole day and well into the evening. It’s only backfired on me once…I visited New Orleans a few years ago and ended up taking a 3-hour nap and missed a dinner reservation. Oops. So pro tip: set an alarm for like an hour or so…just in case.
So consider that midday break advice that’s been circulating forever as valid. It really works, and you’ll have a much better trip because of it. If you’ve got kids, missing out on that midday break could mean some super cranky kids later (and I’ve seen it in Disney World). But then again, I kinda’ get super cranky, too, if I don’t get my nap.
