Spirit Airlines Announces Cuts for Orlando Airport Flight Attendants
Back on August 29th, Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year, and then announced flight cuts at twelve different airports in early September.
Orlando International Airport (MCO) was NOT part of those cuts, but many flight attendants have been left wondering if their jobs are next on the chopping block. Unfortunately, now we know just how many MCO Airport-based flight attendants will be impacted.
The Orlando Business Journal has confirmed that, following the September 23rd announcement that Spirit Airlines would furlough a total of 1,800 employees nationwide, we now know that 350 of those will be flight attendants at Orlando International Airport. Even worse, those furloughs will START on December 1st.
While the furloughs are supposed to be temporary, in the letter the company wrote to the state, they admitted that they’re unsure how long they’ll actually last. MCO Airport also isn’t the only one being affected — 71 flight attendants will be furloughed at Miami International Airport, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will furlough 309 flight attendants.
So what led to this second bankruptcy? Well, Spirit Airlines reported operating revenue of $1.02 billion for Q2 2025, which was down 20% from that same period in 2024, and overall, there was a net loss of $245.8 million. In a statement, the company said, “As part of our ongoing restructuring, we are taking steps to align staffing with our fleet size and expected flight volume. We recognize the impact of this decision on affected team members, and we are committed to treating them with care and respect during this process.”
What’s really interesting is that these furloughs at MCO Airport are among the airline still being a key player at the airport, serving 7.83 million passengers in 2024, and was the second-busiest carrier in the hub. The Orlando Business Journal did reach out to MCO to ask if any operational changes are expected to be made ahead of the winter season due to the furloughs, but has not received a response.
