I’ve been using TSA PreCheck for 6 years, and these are new unspoken rules I will be following when I fly!

TSA has seen some changes lately. From not removing shoes to the Real ID requirements, flying in 2025 might be a little confusing. Some passengers chose to use TSA PreCheck when going through security at the airport to save time and some of the hassle that comes with security. These are 4 unspoken rules in light of the changes happening if you are using PreCheck.

1. Bring Your Physical ID Anyways

TSA is rolling out new “Touchless ID” technology that allows PreCheck travelers at certain airports to verify their identity with facial recognition alone, which might lead you to think you won’t need to have your ID handy. Here’s the unspoken rule: always keep your physical ID handy. Even with the new system, TSA still requires you to carry a government-issued ID in case the tech glitches or when the system is down. You don’t want to get to the front to realize the system is down and hold up the line digging through your carry-on item for your ID.

2. You Can Utilize Family Lanes

If your Disney trip includes kids, strollers, or a luggage cart packed with Mickey ears, look for airports with the new “Families on the Fly” lanes. These dedicated lines for families and military travelers are popping up at major vacation gateways, like Orlando International. They can make a huge difference when you’re juggling multiple boarding passes and a toddler who is overwhelmed.

3. Have Your Real ID

On May 7, 2025, every traveler flying domestically must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another accepted ID, such as a passport or DHS Trusted Traveler card. PreCheck won’t save you if you show up with the wrong ID. If you do not have a Real ID, the TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process, which includes collecting information such as your name and current address to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening. This one little detail can make the difference between a smooth security check and waving goodbye to your flight from the terminal entrance.

4. Don’t Think You Don’t Need TSA Anymore

With the July 2025 rule change allowing all passengers to keep their shoes on, some travelers might wonder if PreCheck is still worth it. The short answer? Absolutely. PreCheck members still skip removing belts, light jackets, and laptops, keep liquids tucked safely in carry-ons, and often get through security in under 10 minutes, compared to 20–30 minutes in standard lines. PreCheck is still like the Lightning Lane for airport security, and it’s one line you actually want to be in.
