“I Can’t Believe It Survived My Suitcase!” This $15 Walmart Hat Is My New Travel Essential

If you’ve ever tried to pack a hat in a carry-on, you know the struggle. I’m pretty insistent about wearing hats in the sun (shade that face!) but finding one that’s both cute and packable is harder than it should be.

Trust me when I tell you you can literally wad this hat up in a suitcase!

This summer, I took a chance on a $15 find from Walmart. And let me tell you—I’ve put this little hat through it.

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

I travel almost full-time for my job. That means I pack, and re-pack, a lot — so I have pretty specific requirements for my travel wardrobe. I need things to be neutral so I can mix and match clothes. I need my clothes to be washable so I can do hotel sink laundry when I need to, and I need them to be able to be tumble dried so that when I need to empty my suitcase, wash the clothes and immediately re-pack them. I can. What can I say? It comes up more than I ever thought it would.

That said, I dont go on a trip without bringing a hat. When I tell you this $15 hat has been stuffed in my suitcase, rolled up between sandals and charging cords, and wedged between packing cubes… I am not even exaggerating. And every single time, it has bounced right back.

Yep, this little Walmart hat has crossed OCEANS with me.

The secret? It’s a soft knit style that holds its shape surprisingly well. No creasing, no floppy weirdness, no ironing required. I’ve worn it across multiple trips this summer, and it’s become a staple. The brim is wide enough to give real sun protection without veering into “oversized beach hat” territory, which makes it perfect for city walking, beach time, and casual sightseeing.

I bought it in brown, but this hat also comes in black and white.

Now I have bought “packable” hats before that were woven out of paper, and I’ve still ended up with a creased brim or an odd dent — but that’s not the case with the knit fabric this one is made out of. And while I have yet to be caught in a downpour with it, fortunately, this hat seems like it would dry very quickly if I did get it wet.

I own the brown version, but this panama hat is also available at Walmart in black and white — so you can go with the neutral that suits you best!

Why I Love This Hat

  • Actually Packable: Rolls up in your suitcase and pops back into shape with no creases or crushed brim drama.
  • Face-Shading Without the Flop: Wide enough to offer legit sun protection, but not so wide it blocks your vision or screams “beach only.”
  • Lightweight & Breathable: The knit material is soft and airy, even in hot weather.
  • Style-Ready: Looks cute as-is, but I also change it up by tying a scarf around it.
  • Budget-Friendly: Have I mentioned this hat is JUST $15!
  • Travel-Tested: Survived multiple summer trips in carry-on bags.

At just $15, this one gets a solid recommend from me — especially if you’re a #carryoncrewforever traveler! Keep following us here at DFB for more great travel wardrobe finds.
