There are a few things travelers can do ahead of time to stay alert. The Department of State posts updated travel advisories, country information, and security alerts on its travel.state.gov website. U.S. citizens can learn about driving and road safety abroad, lodging safety, and how to be safe and healthy abroad.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to read the travel advisory report from the U.S. Department of State before arriving at the destination. A travel advisory describes the risks and recommended precautions for U.S. citizens. The alerts range from level one to level four, with a color corresponding to each level:

  • 1 – Exercise normal precautions
The lowest advisory level for safety and security risks. Per the Department of State, “There is some risk in any international travel, and conditions in other countries may differ from those in the United States.”
  • 2 – Exercise increased caution
As the heading implies, the Department of State recommends that you be aware of increased risks to safety and security.
  • 3 – Reconsider travel
Per the Department of State, “Reconsider your travel to the destination due to serious risks to safety and security.”
  • 4 – Do not travel
The Department of State says, “This is the highest advisory level due to life-threatening risks. The U.S. government may have very limited or no ability to help, including during an emergency. We advise that U.S. citizens do not travel to the country, or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.”
