“Is This Real?!” — Standing Airplane Seats Could Be Coming Soon and They Look as Nightmarish as They Sound
Traveling isn’t easy, and it only gets harder the longer your flight is, the earlier/later in the day it is, the more people you travel with — do you see where this is going? Don’t even get us STARTED about driving.
Bottom line: traveling is NOT EASY, but there are things that can make it a little easier. Maybe that looks like paying for a window or aisle seat so you can be more comfortable, upgrading your seat, or making sure you have movies and/or books downloaded to keep yourself and/or your kids busy as you fly. But do you know what would make flying way harder? STANDING SEATS.
No, unfortunately we’re not kidding. Business Insider recently reported that Italian seat manufacturer recently unveiled a new design that could reduce the cost of travel and allow for more seats per plane. The caveat? YOU’RE STANDING UP.
EXCUSE us?! What is this, Pipeline from SeaWorld Orlando? Why in the world would we want to STAND UP (practically) on our flight? This isn’t accessible for many people, and frankly just isn’t comfortable for many more. The designer proudly mentioned that it cut the space between seats — trust us, we see it, and we hate it. But it gets better! They have TRAY TABLES. (And by that we mean, goodness gracious, please take it away.)
Apparently, this would allow for airplanes to add 20% more passengers on board each flight, but let’s be honest — there will likely be 50% less people on every single flight because I think most of us would freeze in fear if we ever saw these on a plane. Not to worry though, some users on X have spoken up saying they work on airplane seats, and that there’s no way these would ever pass inspection. Listen, we know people lie on the internet all the time, but WOW do we hope that’s true, because we don’t think the words “standing seats” should ever be put in the same sentence as “airplane.”
While it doesn’t seem like these will become reality anytime soon, some airlines have expressed interest in standing seats, and that has us VERY nervous. Don’t worry, we’ll be keeping a VERY close eye on this and plan to warn you if there’s ever the chance we’ll have to choose between standing on our flight for a cheap ticket or sitting down and spending a small fortune.
