7 Things Orlando Airport Wishes You Knew When Traveling to Disney World

If you’ve been planning a trip to Disney World, you’ve probably already made the BIG decisions. Maybe you’ve picked out your hotel. Maybe you’ve decided where you want to eat (Yes, we’re biased when we say that’s a VERY IMPORTANT DECISION). Maybe you’ve booked the trip and you’re now thinking about how you’ll get to Orlando.

MCO Airport

Well, for most of us, flying to Orlando is the way we get to Disney World. However, if you are flying into Orlando International Airport to visit the resort, there are some things you should probably know.

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

So here are the things you should be aware of and know before you fly in and out of Orlando International Airport.

Get there early

So you’ve had your fun in Disney World and it’s time to go home. On your departure date, you’ll want to get to the airport early, way before your departure time. How early? Well, the recommended time is three hours before your flight is scheduled to leave. Yep, THREE WHOLE HOURS.

Orlando International Airport can get very busy

That’s because Orlando International Airport is a very busy airport and things like checking in, going through security, and finding your gate could take you a while. If for some reason you DO breeze through the airport quickly, though, you’ll still have time to find a quiet place to sit and de-stress with a cup of coffee and a snack. However, you may very well need every minute of those three hours.

Know your terminal

Before you leave Disney World, make sure you know what terminal your flight leaves from before you arrive at the airport. You’ll need to make sure you know how to get to your gate. Don’t wait until you get to the airport and have to fight the crowds to look at the departure boards.

Airport tram station

So here’s the thing — more than likely, you’ll have to take the airport tram to your terminal. If you don’t know your terminal, you won’t know which tram to take.

5 Changes Announced for Orlando Airport

Follow TSA Guidelines

You need to know TSA guidelines before you ever step foot in an airport because it will affect how you pack. First, you need to know the 3-1-1 rule for liquids: each passenger may only carry no more than 3.4 ounces of liquid in any one container, and all containers must be put in one clear quart-sized bag. There are SOME items that aren’t included in that rule, so you’ll want to go over those on the TSA website.

Know what you can bring through security at the airport

You will also need to know what items are prohibited. For example, for a while, the Coca-Cola detonator bottles from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge were banned from checked and carry-on luggage. However, that ban has been lifted. You can also travel with a toy lightsaber in either a carry-on or checked bag.

Use MCO Reserve

If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, which allows you to use a dedicated shorter security line at the TSA checkpoint, you’ll want to sign up for MCO Reserve, which is 100% free. MCO Reserve allows you to schedule a time to go through a shorter separate security sign.

MCO Reserve is available from 5 AM to 5 PM, and if you have a flight departing between 6:30 AM and 8:30 PM, you’re eligible to book a reservation.

The AMAZING, FREE Service You’re Not Using at Orlando Airport

Download the MCO App

You can save yourself a lot of time and frustration if you download the MCO app, which will give you your flight updates, tell you all about shopping and dining, PLUS show you maps of each terminal so you can find your way around the airport easily.

You can even use the app to save where you parked, if you need to do that for some reason. This app will make your time at the airport a lot less stressful.

Double-check your flight details

Even if you think you know all your exact flight details, you may be wrong and that could end up a costly mistake, especially if you miss your flight. Also, flight details can and often change, so you’ll need to make sure you’re constantly checking for delays, gate changes, or anything else.

Always double-check those details — you can do that on the MCO app and with the airline app. Also, give those apps permission to send you notifications if something changes.

Book your transportation before you arrive

You need to know how you’re getting from the airport to Disney World before you arrive, so you’ll want to make sure your transportation is taken care of before you fly. You can rent a car, pre-book a rideshare service, or book a shared shuttle service like Mears Connect.

The important thing is that you need to have your transportation taken care of so you can just immediately head to Disney World as soon as you’ve arrived and picked up your bags.
