NEWS: Orlando Theme Park Is Among Nation’s Most Dangerous for Employees
It takes a lot of work to keep a theme park running in tip-top shape — and a lot of employees to do it.
Orlando is home to several theme parks and not all of them are quite as large as Disney World or Universal. Some may not be filled with roller coasters and rides, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth checking out! You might not want to apply for a job at one in particular, though, and you’ll soon find out why.
A new study of theme parks in the United States has revealed which ones had the highest work-related incidents in 2023. The study, which was conducted by OnFocus, used data from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) to find out which attractions were the safest and most dangerous places to work.
And, among the nation’s most dangerous is WonderWorks Orlando. WonderWorks is a science-focused indoor amusement park that combines education and entertainment, featuring over 100 different exhibits. While it’s not a traditional theme park with roller coasters like Disney World, it’s still a pretty popular attraction in Orlando.
But, this data has revealed it may not be the safest place to work.
Of the 10 least safe U.S. theme parks by incident rate per 100 employees, WonderWorks Orlando comes in second place with a 16.83 incident rate out of 100. The only theme park to beat WonderWorks was DTZIP, LLC, a zipline attraction based out of Las Vegas, Nevada.
WonderWorks had 101 employees on average throughout 2023, and 17 total incidents were reported over the year.
The report notes, “On the flip side, parks such as WonderWorks Orlando and DTZIP LLC are raising alarms with incident rates as high as 16.8 and 19.35 per 100 employees, respectively. These figures indicate that nearly one in six workers at some of the most popular attractions is experiencing an issue—something that shouldn’t be ignored.”
Also noteworthy is Dollywood’s presence on the list of 10 least safe U.S. theme parks by incident rate per 100 employees, with the HeartSong Resort taking spot nine out of 100.
Disney Parks and Resorts had an incident rate of 7.66 per 100 employees in 2023, while Universal Orlando’s incident rate was 5.11 per 100 employees.
