2 Dates You Might Want to AVOID the Disney Skyliner

There’s just nothing like taking a ride on the Disney World Skyliner, you know?!

Disney World’s Skyliner

I mean, when you’re on the Skyliner you’re soaring high above the crowds, waving “bye bye” bus lines, and traveling “oh so conveniently” between many of the Disney World Resort hotels and the parks. We’re big fans of the Skyliner experience (if you couldn’t tell). If you’re looking forward to hopping aboard on your next trip to Disney World, we’ve gotta go over the dates you’ll want to avoid!

Just in case you have no idea what the Skyliner is, let’s do a quick refresher. The Disney Skyliner has been running since September 2019, and it provides a super convenient way for guests staying at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Pop Century, and Disney’s Riviera Resort to access both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.

Skyliner

Now, with that out of the way, there are some dates that you should avoid the Skyliner, but don’t worry that you’ll be stranded. You will still have options like buses, monorails, boats, Minnie Vans, just to name a few. Here are two specific dates when you should avoid the Disney Skyliner.

When It’s Closed for Refurbishment

First up, as you can imagine, in order to keep the Skyliner in tip-top working order, Disney has to shut it down for maintenance. In the past several years, we have typically seen the Skyliner go down each January for around a week.

The Skyliner closes temporarily in January

Here are the dates it went under refurb for the past four years:

  • January 24 to January 28, 2021
  • January 23 to January 28, 2022
  • January 22 to January 29, 2023
  • January 16 to January 27, 2024 (most of it reopened on January 21st)

Skyliner Closed

So, if that regularity is any indication, you would most likely want to avoid trying to use the Skyliner for at least the last two weeks in January each year when it goes under refurbishment.

Days When Bad Weather is Predicted

In case you didn’t know, Florida weather can be a little unpredictable. One minute it’s sunny and beautiful, and the next it’s like the sky just decided to empty itself all at once. Now, the Skyliner doesn’t do well with bad weather, especially lightning. If any lightning is reported within a 10-mile radius, you’ll find the Skyliner shut down for safety reasons.

Look out for stormy weather!

On days like this, it’s better to plan ahead and have your alternate transportation method in mind (buses, Minnie Vans, etc.). Once the weather passes, the Skyliner will be back up and running again. Also, remember that Florida gets hit by hurricanes, so you’ll want to keep an eye on the weather when you’re making your plans.

Too many storms for the Skyliner

Those are just a couple of the most important dates to try and avoid the Disney Skyliner when planning your next trip to Disney World. In the meantime, keep it right here at DFB for all the latest!
