WARNING: Severe Storms and Heavy Rainfall in Store for Disney World This Week
As if planning a Disney World trip isn’t already complicated enough without having to worry about severe weather, unfortunately, it can be a near certainty during summer months.
Thunderstorms, wind, and heavy rainfall can come out of seemingly nowhere — catching you off guard. Luckily, storms tend to only last for short periods of time…except when they don’t. If you’ve got a trip to Disney World planned this upcoming week, consider this your official warning.
Be prepared for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms if you’re heading to Disney World or anywhere else in Central Florida this week! WESH reports “a pretty big rain event will play out over Florida this week.” Some areas of the state are expected to get up to seven inches of rain.
With the new model data in, the rain forecast continues to hone in on a big flood concern for South Florida the next few days- and plenty of rains for us as well.
The interesting thing to me is that there should be a fairly short cutoff between flooding rain and just rain… pic.twitter.com/vVxz7AfXea

A low-pressure system will form in the Gulf of Mexico and will bring increased rainfall every day this week. According to News 6, this system will continue to move northeast over the state and as it enters the open waters of the Atlantic, it could possibly develop the system.
Because of this, the National Hurricane Center is giving the area a 20% chance of development over the next seven days.
Hopefully, this weather is good news for the Sassagoula River boats which are currently not running in Disney World due to low water levels.
If you are relying on the ferry only to find that it is closed unexpectedly due to something like weather, you may not know what to do! Closures happen from time to time due to weather and technical issues. We have also seen the boats close in the summer due to low water levels and other construction in the area.
You can prepare for storms by packing rain gear and extra dry clothes to change into. We even recommend an extra pair of shoes — or socks, at least. Sometimes the rain can cool things down, but not really enough to warrant bringing a jacket. Though, if you think you’ll be more comfortable, a light rain jacket might be just the thing.
Cast Members throughout Disney World are trained on how to keep guests safe during severe weather conditions. If you need to, take shelter in a gift shop or other indoor area, and make sure to listen to instructions being relayed through Cast Members or park announcements for safety information and updates.
Summer weather in Central Florida can be unpredictable but we do our best to let you know when severe storms are on their way. It can sometimes be unavoidable on an already planned trip — but you can still have an incredible time! Stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for the latest updates from Disney World and more!
