7 Juicy Secrets You Learn As a Magic Kingdom Cast Member
We have some amazing team members on the DFB crew, and some of them used to work at Disney World!
Specifically, a few of our coworkers worked in Magic Kingdom, but for some of them, it’s been a few years. We asked all our former Cast Members if they could tell us some juicy secrets they learned as Magic Kingdom Cast Members, and BOY did they deliver! The following secrets are top-notch, so grab your popcorn and get ready for the tea!
Characters Can Communicate IN Character
Have you ever been watching one of Disney’s incredible shows and wondered what would happen if something happened on stage to one of the characters, but they had no way of letting the crew know? (No? Okay, maybe that’s just an anxious thought of ours…moving on.) Well don’t worry — all characters have a secret signal that they can give if they’re in distress and need to go off stage.
This is for all characters no matter where they are. These signals are mostly used on stage, where the stage crew can easily see them and take action quickly and efficiently, without the audience knowing. What may warrant such an emergency depends on the person, but it could be if someone has hurt themselves during the show, they’re suddenly not feeling well, or feel unsafe for one reason or another.

There are Multiple Rooms
Now, we don’t want to go into this one in too much detail because ruining the magic is NOT something we ever want to do. However, if you’ve ever noticed that the family in front of you isn’t leaving when you head inside to meet a character, that’s because there’s more than one room.
That’s really all we’ll say here! Disney uses more than one room during meet and greets to help the line move a little faster, especially on busy days or for very popular characters. Now, this is really only the case for indoor character meet and greet locations, since outdoor ones usually aren’t “rooms” to begin with. But now you know — that family in front of you did NOT just disappear into thin air!
Here’s where to find ALL the character meet and greets in Disney World!
There’s a Subway in the Utilidor!
It’s true! There is a Subway in the Utilidor, but we’re talking about the restaurant, not an underground train! Now, we don’t have any photos of it since that’s very much not allowed, but you’ll just have to trust our amazing former Cast Members.
And if you’re not feeling like Subway, don’t worry. You’ll also be able to find burgers, chicken tenders, and more in the Mouseketeria. Now, this is all the same quality food you’ll find above the Utilidor at the Magic Kingdom restaurants, meaning it’s not gourmet, but it’s pretty good!
The Utilidor Isn’t Underground
Speaking of underground, that’s actually not true — the Utilidor is built at a normal level, but the majority of Magic Kingdom is built on the second story!
So while the Utilidor is under the park, it’s not underground at all. Now, the Utilidors don’t span the entirety of Magic Kingdom park, but it does touch all 5 lands to allow Cast Members easy access without park guests seeing a Tomorrowland Cast Member “out of place” in Frontierland. So parts of Magic Kingdom are built on the first story, but it’s certainly hard to tell where as you walk around!
There’s A “Glow Cage” Down There
Ever wonder where Disney keeps some of that back stock merchandise in Magic Kingdom? The answer is the Utilidors, and one of our former Cast Members has given us the very funny mental image of what they called “Glow Cages.”
These Glow Cages were made up of a plethora of glow wands, necklaces, sippers, and bubble wands…all behind literal bars. It’s like they were in jail or something! According to our former Cast Member DFB writer, she said it was always her favorite thing to see.
Check out our ultimate packing list for toddlers in Disney World (bubble wands are 100% on this list)!
Cast Members Celebrate Holidays in the Utilidors!
We’re talking about the Utilidors a lot, but that’s because most of us will never see them! One of our former CMs also shared with us that on the first nights of Magic Kingdom’s Halloween and Christmas parties, the Cast Members will celebrate in the Utilidors!
At these events, Cast Members can take photos with characters (a VERY rare occurrence down there) and get a goody bag. For Halloween, our former Cast Member got some full-size candy bars, and for Christmas, a special ornament!
Identity Theft Is a Real Problem
And lastly, and probably the funniest — if Cast Members forget their name tag at home, they’ll be given one that says “Chris from Orlando” (regardless of their gender), or another name tag that isn’t theirs.
One of our former Cast Members shared that when she forgot hers, she was either given “Jorge” or “Abbey from Arkansas.” Now, this may not seem like a big deal, but if that Cast Member receives a Cast Compliment that day from a guest, they may not receive it because that’s not their actual name!
We’re always here to bring you the latest and greatest Disney stories and news, so stay tuned to DFB!
