NEWS: SAG-AFTRA Approves Deal to End Hollywood Actor Strike

The entertainment industry has been in chaos for much of 2023.

Not only did the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) go on strike (although that strike is now over), the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) also went on strike in July and has been on strike ever since. Well, we’ve got some good news: a tentative deal has been approved by the union and the strike is over.

According to Variety, SAG-AFTRA  has reached a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) that will end the strike, which has lasted a total of 118 days, making it the longest strike against entertainment studios in history.

The strike officially ended at 12:01AM on Thursday, November 9th. SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee approved the new deal with a unanimous vote. The agreement will now need to go to the union’s national board for approval. The new deal offers protections for actors against AI, a big pay increase, a “streaming participation bonus,” and increases in pension and health contributions.

Both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though, have already taken quite a toll on the entertainment industry. Because of the strikes, many movies and TV shows have been delayed, including several Disney projects like Disney’s Snow White and the animated feature Elio

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently commented on the strike, saying that he felt “optimistic that we’ll figure that out relatively soon.” Iger had previously said that the strike was “disturbing” and that the demands were “unrealistic.”

After the union’s national board votes on the new agreement, details of the deal will be released to the public. That’s expected to happen on Friday, November 9th.
