Flying to Disney World is About To Get EASIER
Traveling by plane has been a bit rough lately.
Flight cancelations have affected passengers significantly in the last few months, record-breaking crowds have hit the Orlando International Airport, and the airline industry is expecting a wave of pilot retirements soon. But, things might be looking up for those traveling in the eastern U.S.
According to CNBC, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has added a new set of flight routes in order to deal with the congestion in the eastern U.S. These 169 new routes have a higher altitude — mostly above 18,000 feet — making them shorter and faster.
The longer more zigzagged routes were “designed for planes relying on ground-based radar and not the GPS that modern aircraft use,” and have since been replaced by these new direct routes.
Some of these new routes will take place over the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and are for flights to and from Florida — where flights are often faced with obstacles like space launches, military activity, and thunderstorms. These new routes not only aim to lessen the congestion in these spaces but also will help air traffic controllers have more flexibility when poor weather occurs.
These new routes are debuting just in time for the summer travel season after airlines have pressured the FAA to make a change in response to all of the congestion and delays we’ve been seeing lately. Last year, “1.7 million flights, more than 20% of those operated by U.S. airlines, were delayed, up from 1.5 million, or roughly 16% of flights, in 2019, before the pandemic.”
Hopefully, this new change will lead to smoother travel for those flying to Disney World soon. We’ll keep an eye on the situation, so stay tuned to DFB for more updates.
