The 4000-Year-Old Food That You Have to See to Believe

Since we’re food bloggers, we’ve tried a LOT of umm…unusual eats.

Squid’s Revenge…yeah this was a weird one

We’ve had everything from octopus cocktails to burgers made to look moldy on purpose. But now, we’ve spotted a NEW snack that might just shock you. Would you be willing to eat “mammoth meatballs”…for REAL?

The Washington Post recently posted a video on Instagram about what appears to be a GIGANTIC meatball made from woolly mammoth DNA. It was manufactured by Australian cultured meat company Vow, made with 4000-year-old woolly mammoth DNA that was combined with elephant DNA.

Vow’s goal as a company is to increase awareness of lab-grown protein as a sustainable alternative to conventional meat. Vow believed that making a mammoth meatball would be a good “conversation starter” for this scientific field.

But don’t expect to start eating woolly mammoth soon! The meatball has to go through extensive testing before scientists can agree that it’s ready and safe to be eaten. It IS made with 4000-year-old DNA, after all!
