The Best and Worst Things We Ate in Disney World in August

It’s basically the law that August signifies the beginning of the fall season.

Oh, My Gourd Cupcake

Sure, it’s still ridiculously hot in Florida but we’re ready for all the Halloween treats and pumpkin spice! That said, there were a LOT of new foods to try in Disney World this August and not everything had a pumpkin theme. In fact, World Princess Week brought us a ton of princess treats! Find out the five BEST and the five WORST things we ate in Disney World this August.

The Five Best

Chicken and Brie Sandwich — Gasparilla Island Grill

We’re starting our best list with the Chicken and Brie Sandwich from Gasparilla Island Grill in Disney’s Grand Floridian Hotel & Spa, made with grilled chicken, ham, spinach, raspberry mustard, and mayonnaise on a brioche bun, served with French fries or housemade chips for $11.99.

Chicken and Brie Sandwich

This sandwich was hearty but not heavy or overfilling like a burger can be, and we enjoyed the Thanksgiving vibes from the blend of raspberry mustard and Brie cheese. Even though there’s a lot going on with this sandwich, everything worked well together and we loved it! If you’re looking for a meal with fall vibes, you might want to stop by Gasparilla Island Grill.

Manzo Brasato — Tutto Italia Ristorante

We visited Tutto Italia in EPCOT’s Italy Pavilion to give their menu a try, and the Manzo Brasato was a major standout. Made with braised beef chuck short rib served with portobello mushroom ravioli in a red wine sauce for $42, this dish was one of our favorites.

Manzo Brasato

The large portion of beef was so tender that we barely even needed to use a knife (!!) and it had a savory flavor that was absolutely perfect. The mushroom ravioli had a robust flavor that worked well with the meat and sauce (but might be too much for people who don’t like mushrooms), and we thought it was delicious! If you’re dining at Tutto Italia, this is a must-try.

Aurora Fruit Tart — Le Petit Cafe

We visited Le Petit Cafe in Disney’s Riviera Resort to try a World Princess Week treat! The Aurora Fruit Tart was made with diplomat cream, raspberry mousse, and fresh berries for $6.99. Not only was this treat beautiful, but it was also super tasty!

Aurora Fruit Tart

The cookie base was baked perfectly and it complemented the raspberry mousse that was melt-in-your-mouth good. Plus, the berries on the top were nice and fresh! This was one of the best fruity treats we’ve ever had in Disney World. Sadly, it was only available through August 27th, but maybe it’ll be back next year!

Here’s our review of the Aurora Fruit Tart!

Baked Scampi Dip — Coastal Eats

Coastal Eats was one of four 2022 EPCOT Food & Wine Festival booths that opened in August (rather than July), and we absolutely LOVED the Baked Scampi Dip, made with shrimp, scallops, and a baguette for $6. This was a returning item and it did not disappoint.

Baked Scampi Dip with shrimp, scallops, and baguette

You have to love seafood to enjoy this dip but if you do, you NEED to try this. We got large chunks of shrimp and scallops, the dip was full of rich buttery cheese, and the toasted breadcrumbs added a nice crunch. This returning dish continues to be a must-eat at the festival.

Everything Bagel with Smoked Salmon — BoardWalk Deli

We tried quite a few menu items from the new BoardWalk Deli on Disney’s BoardWalk and one breakfast item was our favorite. The Everything Bagel with Smoked Salmon comes with vine-ripened tomato, arugula, and caper-onion cream cheese with your choice of side for $9.99, all on an everything bagel.

Everything Bagel with Smoked Salmon

Both the bagel and salmon were super fresh and we loved the flavor of the smoked salmon. We liked several breakfast items at BoardWalk Deli but this one made it to the top of the list!

The Five Worst

Mickey Pumpkin Vanilla Cupcake — Zuri’s Sweets Shop

Now we’re heading into the worst eats of August, but keep in mind that our “worst” may not be yours and that not all of our worst eats are due to taste. The Mickey Pumpkin Vanilla Cupcake from Zuri’s Sweets Shop in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the perfect example of this because it’s not bad at all, but there are lots of other good (and better) Halloween snacks available

Mickey Pumpkin Cupcake

This treat is a classic vanilla cupcake topped with orange and green icing and chocolate Mickey ears for $5.19, and we were disappointed that it was just basic vanilla with no fall or pumpkin flavors. We did like it but it just wasn’t anything special, and if you’re looking for more of a pumpkin flavor we recommend trying the Oh, My Gourd Cupcake instead!

Hades Hot Dog — Friar’s Nook during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

This next treat is available only during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, so you need a ticket to give this a try! The Hades Hot Dog is available from Friar’s Nook only during the party, and it was disappointing in a few ways. This dog is a new version of its past counterpart and it was made with a spicy beef and pork hot dog with Hades’ relish and pickles topped with house-made violet mustard for $11.49.

Hades Hot Dog

So this wasn’t actually bad at all but it was VERY spicy, the relish was basic, and we didn’t get a ton of mustard — plus the mustard was just dyed violet, not violet-flavored. Also, it had a…how should we say…unique look fit for a Halloween party, but if looking at this picture doesn’t make you hungry, it might not work for you.

Here’s our review of the Hades Hot Dog!

Chilling Chamber Pop — Sleepy Hollow during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

The Chilling Chamber Pop is also only available at Sleepy Hollow during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, although it was previously available in different flavor combos beginning earlier this year and then again in April for Disney’s Halfway to Halloween celebration. This party version of the treat is made with chocolate crumbs, cherry buttercream, and dark chocolate pearls topped with a Haunted Mansion Tightrope Walker chocolate piece for $5.49.

Chilling Chamber Pop

Although we loved the look of this treat (the Tightrope Walker is iconic!), we didn’t really like the flavor, which was heavy with an artificial cherry taste. The texture was also odd with the dark chocolate pearls throughout the cherry buttercream rather than just on top. If you’re looking for a better sweet treat to get at the party, we recommend trying the Worms and Dirt Funnel Cake from Sleepy Hollow instead!

Banana Bread — BoardWalk Deli

We’re back at the BoardWalk Deli with Banana Bread that cost us $3.79, and this was probably the treat we disliked the most out of all the breakfast items we tried.

Banana Bread

Sadly, it was dry and not flavorful, and in fact, we’ve had better banana bread at Starbucks. With so many other tasty breakfast items at BoardWalk Deli, you might want to skip this one.

Wishing on Stars — Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory

And finally, we’ve arrived at the World Princess Week treat called Wishing on Stars from Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort — French Quarter. This is an olive oil cake with banana cream pie mousse, white chocolate Feuilletine crunch, and white chocolate glaçage for $6.29.

Wishing on Stars

We actually really liked the taste of this cake, which was light and reminded us a bit of banana pudding, but something went wrong with the design of Princess Tiana and we couldn’t get over her poor face. This was probably just our batch but as long as you don’t care about Tiana’s design, this cake might actually be worth a try! Disney has not yet said how long this treat will be available.
