We REALLY Need to Know Where You Stand On This Pickle Debate.

As you might imagine, the DFB Team has more than its fair share of food debates.

Mushy inside… oh, yeah.

From whether those Gideon’s Bakehouse cookies are realllyyy worth the wait or not, to “would you eat this” hot dog toppings, our meetings can sometimes (OK, often) be derailed with “nosh or not” discussions. And don’t even get us started on how long it can take to decide our Best of the Fest for the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival each year!

Even so, we were surprised at the diversity of opinions when a recent meeting devolved into discussions of a certain frozen treat.

Nope, the frozen treat in question doesn’t involve Dole Whip!

A colleague let it slip that she has been making repeated trips to Bahama Buck’s for pickle snow cones. PICKLE. SNOW. CONES. Now, there are those among us who would tell you we love pickle anything. But, a frozen pickle treat? A field trip quickly became necessary.

Bahama Buck’s in Kissimmee

If you’re not familiar with Bahama Buck’s, it is a chain started in Lubbock, Texas, that is quickly growing and currently has over 100 locations in the United States. The main attraction here is shaved ice — not really a snow cone, but you knew what we meant, right?

It’s a little sticky in here.

If you are visiting Disney World, there is a location nearby in the Shoppes at Sunset Walk. The area is a fun “out of the Disney bubble” outing — shopping and dining on a promenade with live music in the evenings. When we visited on a Friday night, Bahama Buck’s was packed, and … (as you might imagine after a long day of serving cups of ice coated in sugary syrup) sticky.

Soooo many flavors!

You have your choice of DOZENS of syrups here — sweet cherry and cotton candy, sour lemon and blue raspberry, and even more unusual flavors like birthday cake, cheesecake, and sugar cookie. You can mix and match them, and top your Sno with your choice of cookies, candies, and specialty syrups, as well.

Gummy Bear Sno at Bahama Buck’s

We were of course here for the pickle juice, but decided we also needed a “sure thing” to taste as a control in our experiment. SCIENCE, amirite? We ordered the Gummy Bear Sno — shaved ice with gummy bear-flavored syrup and gummy bear topping. We immediately noticed that Bahama Buck’s mixes the toppings you order all throughout your cup, rather than just sprinkling them on top. Love that!

Color-changing spoons!

The syrup was verrrryyyy sweet — so sweet that we couldn’t distinguish any real flavor here, but sweet is good! We loved that the spoons change color when they’re cold — a fun little touch.

Pickle Juice Sno with Picadilly Topping (aka THE ABOMINATION)

But enough about that! Let’s get to the MAIN EVENT. We ordered a Pickle Juice Sno with Picadilly Topping. Let’s discuss this “Picadilly” first. Our very scientific Google research yielded the following information: “picadilly” snow cones originated as cherry snow cones topped with chopped dill pickles. It was a Texas thing — which makes sense since Bahama Buck’s started in Texas and since our team member who loves pickle snow cones is from Texas as well.

Check out those pickle chunks.

Bahama Buck’s has leveled up the Picadilly topping — there’s includes the aforementioned dill pickles, as well as salt, chili-lime seasoning (think Tajin), and Chamoy sauce — a condiment made with pickled fruit and chili powder. Yeah. It’s a lot. Our dill pickle Sno started melting immediately — much faster than the gummy bear Sno. We have to assume the salt in the topping added to the melt factor. We tasted it, and, well …

We mean, seriously …

We’re all for sweet and salty (maple bacon milkshake, anyone?), but this was SOUR and salty and just…NO. All we could taste was chili powder and SOUR, no pickle flavor at all. And that’s where we realized we went wrong. That original Picadilly snow cone has a SWEET (cherry) syrup with the pickle topping. We talked with some Bahama Buck’s staff members, who told us that the pickle juice syrup is a sour flavor — and that Picadilly fans usually order something sweet, like mango syrup. OK, we could go for that!

A second field trip is now being planned, to order a sweet flavor with the Picadilly topping…it’s research, after all. If you visit Bahama Buck’s, You’ll pay $4-$10 for your Sno, depending on the flavors and toppings you choose. Let us know what combos you come up with!
