The Average Cost to Fly to Disney World in September 2022
Carefully planned every part of your vacation budget only to have your airfare blow that number out of the water? Getting a better feel for just how much that airplane ticket will cost you can help you make sure you don’t go WAY over budget.
Each month we take a look at the average cost to fly to Disney World in a future month so you can plan appropriately. Right now we’re going to take a look at the cost to fly to the Most Magical Place on Earth in September. Are prices HIGHER than they have been in the past months, or are things getting slightly better? Here’s what we’re seeing.
Our Method
If you’ve seen our “average cost to fly” posts before, then you’re familiar with our method. For those who are new here, welcome! Here’s a look at what we do to come to our average numbers.
First, we take a look at what it would cost to fly from a variety of airports over to Orlando International Airport (MCO). The flights are all from airports within the U.S. on a limited number of airlines. There are a lot of airports and airlines to pick from, and we’d be here for a long time if we looked at them all, so keep in mind that this post only reflects the cost of flights from a select number of airports and a limited number of airlines.
Second, to get to our numbers, we only look at a limited number of dates in the month (September, in this case). We typically look for a roundtrip that departs on a Thursday and returns on a Monday. For September, we picked September 15th through the 19th.
This avoids the September 5th Labor Day holiday and seemed to have more inexpensive/average prices for the month as a whole. To make this choice and look at those average prices, we looked at flights from JFK/LGA to MCO.
Of course, we have the note that the cost of your flight can vary a lot depending on a number of factors, including what dates you’ll be traveling, what airline you choose to fly on, where you’ll be flying from, and more.
Before we dive into the numbers, let’s go over a few more housekeeping matters:
- For most of our prices, we used Google Flights. But for Southwest Airlines we used the Southwest website.
- Costs can change often so be aware of that.
- All prices listed are base ticket prices.
- To calculate the average least expensive flight for each airline and airport, we looked at the least expensive departing flight and least expensive returning flight. We did the same thing for the most expensive flights (looking at the most expensive departing and returning flights).
- The actual price of your ticket may be more expensive depending on what taxes and fees are added on, or if there is a price change when you go to book.
- The times of these flights, how many layovers they have, etc. may not work for you.
- We stuck to “Wanna Get Away” tickets for Southwest Airlines whenever possible.
- We stuck to flights that arrived on the same day they departed (i.e. we tried to not pick any flights that would depart on one day but not arrive until the next day due to layovers, etc.).
- All prices are just for 1 individual.
Alright, now let’s look at those numbers!

The Average Cost
All in all, the average cost to fly to Orlando in September is $253.98 on the low end and $1,067.85 on the high end. On the low end, those numbers are less than the numbers we saw for June, July and August, and several other months. In fact, the last time we saw numbers these low was actually back around February and March of 2022.
The higher end was more expensive than the number we saw in August, but less than what we saw for June and July. It’s a bit closer to the numbers we saw back in April.
Considering that September is typically the time by which many kids are back in school, some of these lower numbers make sense.
The lower average flight cost (at least on our low end of calculations) seems to line up with some of what The Wall Street Journal has reported in terms of average airfare dropping in the fall to around $298, down from May when there were some average fares exceeding $400.
Of course, keep in mind that depending on how fuel prices change over the next several weeks, and other factors, flight costs could vary. Also, note that these are just averages and things could be different when you go to book your trip. Still, we hope these averages give you a sense of how much you should budget for your trip.
What Now?
Now you know how much to budget, so what’s next? If you’re happy with the flight costs you’re seeing, it may be time to jump on them and book. If costs aren’t quite what you’re hoping for, you may want to use Google Flights or flight trackers to see when prices could drop.
Some flight searches on Google did indicate that certain prices were “high” for the trip and that other dates could be cheaper, so that’s something to consider.
