Apparently Disney + T-Mobile = METAVERSE

Lots of changes are coming to the Disney parks, but it seems like the Walt Disney Company is planning even MORE changes outside the theme parks. One of the biggest innovations that Disney has shown a lot of interest in is the concept of a Metaverse and further exploration of Virtual Reality. Now, we’ve got a new look at how Disney is planning to put these emerging technologies to use.

Disney just teamed up with T-Mobile in order to bring to life some of their ideas for radical, new storytelling. Learn more about this partnership and how it could change the way you experience Disney’s stories here.

In a recent press release, T-Mobile announced that they were teaming up with Disney Studios StudioLAB to join the lab “on its quest to help develop advanced storytelling capabilities.” StudioLAB is Disney’s development team that works primarily with new, creative technologies. At this time, the partnership is set to last for 5 years.

Disney likely chose T-Mobile for their extensive 5G network, which boasts a wide range of coverage, the fastest 5G network speeds in the US, and the potential to download, transfer, and store huge amounts of data. Disney plans to use this tool for several different projects, including their work on a Metaverse. Specifically, T-Mobile stated that StudioLAB would work to “improve content production and test new forms of immersive experiences for consumers.”

Walt Disney Studios’ Chief Technology Officer, Jamie Voris, said that the company is “just getting started and the possibilities are endless for how 5G can infuse new magic into the entertainment business.” They plan to develop new mixed reality and immersive experiences with this partnership, and Disney expects that the use of 5G will “radically change” several different aspects of the entertainment industry.

Besides their work with virtual reality, Disney is hoping to use the 5G network to explore new, remote locations for film production. T-Mobile said, “For example, teams might explore the use of wireless technology that enables executives located anywhere in the world to scout a remote movie location.” T-Mobile has already worked extensively with drone technology, and drones may be one way that Disney can learn more about potential filming locations without having to physically travel there.

Drones could also be used in the process of filming itself. The technology could help Disney test “new, more efficient ways to capture, produce and distribute content.” In addition to the potential changes in filming, Disney hopes to use Cloud technology to download, store, and transfer content (such as videos) at faster speeds during production.

The President of Technology at T-Mobile, Neville Ray, stated that “Together, we will use our leading 5G network to spark new innovations aimed at transforming how entertainment can be produced and experienced.” It sounds like many of the changes that will come from this partnership will benefit Disney’s movie production process, but we could see some results in guest experiences as well, such as the new Virtual Reality possibilities.
