You Asked For It. Our FULL Thoughts on BLUE Shrimp at the Star Wars Hotel in Disney World

THE MOMENT YOU ALL HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR HAS ARRIVED. Whew! Sorry about the all-caps, but friends, this is serious business. You saw it. We saw it. We allllllll witnessed the reveal of one extremely unique item that is coming to the Star Wars Hotel. You know what we’re talking about. The colorful. The shocking. The intense. The…blue shrimp!

Atrium

Yes, that’s right folks. We recently got the chance to visit Disney World’s new Star Wars hotel, and we did all the things you would have expected. We had lightsaber training, dressed up in costumes, learned to play galactic card games, and ate all kinds of food. But nothing could prepare us for the very special experience that is…BLUE. SHRIMP.

Oh yeah, you read that correctly. On the second night of our trip, we sat down for our meal in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room. Dinner on this night is a “Taste Around the Galaxy” meal, where you’ll try food inspired by all different planets in the Star Wars universe.

Menu

One of the items served during this meal was the Iced Blue Felucian Shrimp Cocktail. Ever since we saw the promotional photo of this shrimp, we have been SO curious to find out what it tastes like. Here’s that promo photo for reference.

When our server brought the dish to our table, it was actually smoking from dry ice in the lower part of the display stand. Oh, and did we mention that you can smell this shrimp from a mile away? It has a very strong fishy smell. And no, we aren’t exaggerating.

Here it comes!

During this meal, Crew Members tell you a little bit about the planetary fare you’re trying. The blue shrimp comes from the planet Felucia and is a favorite of one of the musical performers on board, Ouannii. Ouannii even came out to help introduce the course when it came time to eat!

Here’s what it looked like when it arrived at our table in all of its glory. The smoke covered some of the food for a while, but once it cleared a bit we saw that they are not kidding when they say it’s BLUE shrimp!

Blue. Shrimp.

There are some other elements on the plate, including Redball Jungle “Cocktail” Sauce, Pickled Mushrooms (that’s the yellow!), and “Ocean Weed.”

Side elements

But once you see those bright blue shrimp, it’s difficult to look away. Needless to say, we’re intrigued. Will it taste as weird as it looks (and smells)?

Are you ready to dig in?

We can confirm that the taste of this shrimp was as vivid as the appearance, but NOT in a good way. That strange smell was an indication of the flavor, and neither was pleasant. Instead of just a normal shrimp cocktail flavor, these had a strong fish flavor (which might have come partly because of the strong fish smell). The blue color comes from soaking the fish in a butterfly tea, and there’s just a slight hint of the floral flavor from that tea, which is a strange mix with normal shrimp.

Not great.

Our server recommended we try the shrimp with the other elements on the plate since some people thought that made them taste a lot better. Unfortunately, the combination tasted worse to us than the blue shrimp on its own. The pickled mushroom especially was a weird flavor to add to the shrimp, and all of the strange textures and flavors together were just not good.

No thank you.

If you don’t like normal shrimp cocktail, you will definitely want to avoid this dish. Still, though we didn’t love it, a couple of the servers said they love the combination when you get a bite with all of the different ingredients together — so you COULD end up a fan of the blue shellfish. Just because we didn’t like it doesn’t mean that you won’t!!

Even though it was a generally unpleasant experience, we’re proud to say that we have tried the infamous blue shrimp. And if Disney was going for unusual and bizarre for the menus at the Star Wars hotel, they definitely hit the mark with this dish! It was fun to try the blue shrimp and it’s a part of our trip that we will never forget. I mean, where else can you eat BLUE SHRIMP?!

Definitely bizarre
