VIDEOS: See What It’s Like to Be Evacuated Off of 6 Disney World Rides

Although Disney World will always be the Most Magical Place On Earth, sometimes things happen that are less than magical.

The PeopleMover was evacuated for mechanical issues months before Disney World’s closures began!

Sometimes it’s just a matter of animatronics not working on rides. Sometimes, it’s animatronics being removed from rides and replaced with something bizarre (Plant Donald, we’re looking at you). Sometimes it’s a ride that just outright breaks down. And for the latter, rides will often get evacuated.

If you’ve never been on a Disney World ride that got evacuated, we’re going to share some videos with you to show you what it’s like. And you’ll see that sometimes it’s not as bad as it sounds — sometimes you get to see parts of the ride you wouldn’t normally get to see — a little peek backstage.

Magic Kingdom

PeopleMover

Okay, so it’s highly likely that one of the rides to get evacuated the most at Disney World recently is the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. This ride goes down A LOT, people. Most recently, one of our readers, Amanda, was riding on the PeopleMover and shared her experience with the ride’s evacuation. And she shared a video with us.

As you can see, Cast Members are telling riders to leave the vehicles and walk off the ride. IIt was unclear what caused the issue with PeopleMover (guests rarely find out why rides get evacuated).

Splash Mountain

Another ride that goes down A LOT and often needs to be evacuated is Splash Mountain (but soon, it will be getting a lot of love and a re-theme!). Most recently, we saw Cast Members assisting guests getting out of boats on the ride and escorting those guests through the ride and toward the exits.

Again, it was unclear why the ride was evacuated, but it was back up and running pretty quickly after that.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run doesn’t get evacuated that often, but a while back, the alarm went off on the ride, and guests were escorted off it. At the time, those standing next to the building were asked to stand farther away. A DFB reader, @banana8050 on Instagram, informed us of the incident.

This video shows how quickly Cast Members can react to alarms and get everyone safely off a ride. Smugglers Run was back up and running pretty quickly after that, though.

Slinky Dog Dash

So what happens AFTER a ride is evacuated? Well, Cast Members figure out whatever the problem is and they fix it. But before they allow guests back on the ride, they have to test it to make sure everything is working properly. When Slinky Dog Dash was evacuated recently, we watched as an empty train worked its way through the track.

This is standard procedure for pretty much every ride at Disney World — Cast Members make sure the ride is working and safe before allowing guests to board again. This happens daily before the park is open to guests as well!

Expedition Everest

Believe it or not, there’s one part of Expedition Everest that has rarely worked properly — and that’s the Yeti. It may seem easy enough to fix this massive animatronic, but it’s actually way too complicated to fix — it’s structurally tied to the mountain itself and to repair it would require extensive reworking. But sometimes, there are other issues that cause the ride to be evacuated, and in this case, a ride vehicle stopped on the track right as it was going up a steep hill. 😲 Our friends over at AllEars shared a video of the incident.

Disney deftly handled the situation and managed to get guests evacuated from the stuck ride. So if this ever happens to you, take a deep breath because Cast members will come to your rescue quickly. You just might get a scary walk down stairs on a roller coaster!

Other

Monorail

Other rides at Disney World often have to be evacuated, too, and that includes the Monorail. When we were recently waiting for the Monorail at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa Station to head to the Magic Kingdom, we were evacuated from the platform. Both monorail lines remained down for a while.

We were eventually evacuated from the station and directed to alternate transportation by Cast Members — we ended up taking a bus with a “Resort Monorail” sign on it to Magic Kingdom — and yes, that kinda’ amused us.

If you do end up on a ride that’s stuck or breaks down, be sure to wait for Cast Members to instruct you on what to do next. Never take matters into your own hands! So these videos should give you an idea of what it’s like to be evacuated from a ride. And if it happens to you, we hope you’re better prepared on knowing what to expect.
