Read About This BIG Genie+ Change If You’re Going to Disney World Soon

It has been a wild ride since Disney Genie+ was first announced for Disney World.

Before Disney Genie+ launched, we were told that it would be $15 per ticket, per day and that guests would only be able to book one attraction at a time. That latter part turned out to be not entirely true, as we were introduced to the world of “stacking” Genie+ reservations and the 120-minute rule. And now, all of that is changing!

What is the 120-Minute Rule?

First of all, let’s clarify that these rules ONLY apply to Disney Genie+, they don’t affect Individual Lightning Lane Selections. If you book your first Genie+ choice in the morning for later in the day, then you can make a second Genie+ Lightning Lane choice once 120 minutes has passed (if you book before park opening time, this countdown starts at park opening time).

Hello, Genie!

So here’s what follows that — you can book a second Genie+ selection when:

  1. You have used the first one you booked.
  2. Your first return time window has ended (if you miss it).
  3. 120 minutes have passed since you booked your last one.

That’s how the 120-minute rule plays into all of this. Now, let’s dive into the changes.

What Has Changed?

Previously, guests could use this 2-hour rule to master the system and keep two or more Genie+ reservations at a time all day long. They would do this by scheduling their first Genie+ selection at 7AM for a time at least two hours after the park opened. Then, at that 2-hour mark, they could book a second selection. Every time they used one of their Genie+ passes, they’d be able to book another, effectively holding two (or more) Genie+ reservations at any given point throughout the day.

Here’s an example of how that would’ve worked in the past, assuming our imaginary guest goes to Hollywood Studios:

  • At 7AM when Genie+ reservations drop for everyone, you book a pass for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster from 12PM-1PM.
  • At 9AM, Hollywood Studios opens and your 2-hour countdown begins to book your second Genie+.
  • At 11AM, you book a Genie+ pass for Tower of Terror from 1PM-2PM.
  • At 12PM, you scan into Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Once you have passed all the checkpoints, you book a new Genie+ reservation for Toy Story Mania for any time later in the day.
  • At 1PM, you scan into Tower of Terror and book another Genie+ reservation for Alien Swirling Saucers at any time later in the day.
  • Now, you’re consistently holding two Genie+ reservations at a time.

But now, it seems like you can no longer do it this way! You can still make use of the 120-minute rule, but once that original Genie+ selection is used, you’ll be limited to booking one Genie+ Lightning Lane selection at a time. Here’s an example:

  • At 7AM when Genie+ reservations drop for everyone, you book a pass for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster from 12PM-1PM.
  • At 9AM, Hollywood Studios opens and your 2-hour countdown begins to book your second Genie+.
  • At 11AM, you book a Genie+ pass for Tower of Terror from 1PM-2PM.
  • At 12PM, you scan into Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Since you have used your original Genie+ reservation, you are limited to holding one at a time.
  • You won’t be able to book another Genie+ until you use the Tower of Terror one or until two hours have passed since Tower of Terror was booked. (In this case, that is 1PM.)

Peter Pan’s Flight Lightning Lane

You can still hold two or more Genie+ selections at a time if you make use of the 120-minute rule, the difference is that now you won’t be able to keep it that way all day long. Even if you scheduled your first Genie+ really late in the day and booked a new one every two hours so that you’re holding four or five Genie+ Lightning Lane reservations at once (which would be pretty challenging to do), you’d still have to obey the laws of the 120-minute rule. That would require using all of your Genie+ selections first or waiting another two hours to book another.

Confused yet? Don’t worry, it’s a lot to take in. We’ll continue to visit the parks and try this system out to get the best handle on it. And we’ll make sure to let you know if Disney World decides to make any more confusing changes!
