PHOTOS: 4 Need-to-Know Construction Updates in Disney World

We’re back to check in on all the construction projects going on around Disney World!

Main Street, U.S.A.

This past week was a big one for some of the major projects going on around the parks — we finally know when the new nighttime show at EPCOT, Harmonious, will debut, we found more progress on two of the major roller coasters coming to EPCOT and Magic Kingdom, and we even got a peek at what’s to come on a recent hotel refurbishment. So, we’ve got a lot to cover — let’s get to it!

Magic Kingdom

TRON: Lightcycle Run

We’re starting off over in Magic Kingdom to check in on the new roller coaster in Tomorrowland, TRON: Lightcycle Run. Last week we noticed that the portion of the track connecting the inside to the outside had been opened, and this week there was some progress on the outdoor canopy area!

Now you can see that the paneling on the building looks close to finished…

…and there’s some new blue netting being installed on the top of the canopy.

If we look at the finished product from the concept art, it looks like the canopy will end up being closed in a bit, so this could be what they’re working on now!

Disney still hasn’t announced an official opening date for the ride, but it was exciting to see some progress on this ride recently, even it if was small.

EPCOT

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Over in EPOCT, we haven’t seen much progress on the new coaster Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind since the solar panels were covered in blue, but we finally spotted some change! We noticed that there was some new silver paneling at the center of the roof.

It’s not clear exactly what the new addition is for, but the color at least matches the concept art.

This is another attraction that we don’t have an opening date for just yet, but there are still quite a few outdoor elements missing when comparing the concept art to the construction progress.

Disney Resorts

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Things have been pretty active when it comes to construction at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort! Last week we noticed that the new roof had been installed over the entryway and now we’re seeing more work being done on the monorail station!

The monorail has been closed since November of last year, and you can still find construction skrim around the area.

More work on the new monorail station

And, on our walk around the resort, we also noticed that the sign for Spirit of Aloha was missing. Disney hasn’t announced any changes to the dinner show, though it has not yet reopened just yet. So, they may just be taking some time to give it extra TLC while it’s closed.

The Polynesian has been undergoing a major refurbishment to receive new Moana-theming and is set to reopen to all guests at in late July, so we will likely be seeing more progress on these projects in the coming weeks.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

And, there’s another monorail resort getting a refurbishment — Disney’s Contemporary Resort! Back in April, Disney began construction on all 9 floors of the Main Tower Guest rooms, blocking off all of the hallways on the upper floors of the tower. And, this week we learned what work is being done behind all that construction skrim — an Incredibles-themed makeover!

Here’s a look at the new rooms!

Disney has described the rooms as blending “a sleek Monorail motif with some favorite characters from Pixar Animation Studios’ “Incredibles” films, including Jack-Jack, Frozone, and Edna Mode.” And, you’ll notice the subtle details in the bathroom…

And, that’s not the only area getting some new features! Disney will soon be adding a collection of “modern art pieces as well as historical, behind-the-scenes photographs of Disney’s Contemporary Resort in development and under construction” in the lobby area.

Here’s what the resort looks like currently

Back in January, we spoke with a Cast Member who shared that the renovations would be completed in the Main Tower Guest Rooms in September 2021, though Disney has only noted that the refurbished rooms will debut this fall. And, of course, construction timelines can change from time to time, so we’ll continue to keep an eye out for updates.

Well, that’s it for another week of construction in Disney World! We’ll continue to keep an eye out for more progress around the parks and resorts so be sure to check back for the latest!
