NEWS: Disney Cruise Line in Talks for New Year-Round Port
We’ve gotten lots of Disney Cruise Line news lately!
Although the Disney Cruise Line has canceled U.S. sailings through July, it’s already looking ahead with its newest ship, the Disney Wish. And as construction continues, Disney is contemplating the future with the addition of another year-round port.
We previously told you that the Disney Cruise Line was in discussions to bring a new year-round port to Fort Lauderdale in 2022, at Port Everglades. This would be Disney’s first year-round port outside of Port Canaveral, and could move an additional 536,000 passengers through Broward County annually.
And today, according to the Orlando Sentinel, the Broward County Commission approved the start of negotiations between Port Everglades and the Disney Cruise Line about this new port. Port Everglades CEO Jonathan Daniels shared, “They are looking for a new home in South Florida and we have the opportunity I think to negotiate a very solid deal financially but I think it goes a little bit beyond that.” At Port Everglades, the Disney Cruise Line would have its own terminal — Cruise Terminal 4 — without having to share with another cruise operator.
These discussions will focus on a year-round vessel at the terminal, with the possibility of adding a second seasonal ship in the future. This year-round vessel would not be able to be the new Disney Wish, as Port Everglades does not have the capacity to handle ships that run on liquified natural gas.
Keep in mind that these are preliminary talks, and nothing has been decided on just yet. But we’ll keep you posted as we receive more updates, so stay tuned to DFB!
