Did You Hop Aboard These Disney Trend Trains?

Disney really knows how to start merchandise trends — we should know because we’ve fallen for so many of them and have closets full of spirit jerseys, Minnie ears, and pins to show for it!

Pin Traders

But there are some trends that sunk their hooks into us, and we have to ask — did you fall for these trends, too? Let’s look at a few!

Tsum Tsums

Tsum Tsums might just be the Beanie Babies of this generation. When they first came out, these little tiny plushies were just SO CHARMING that we had to collect them all.

Tsum Tsum Collection

The beauty of these tiny little creatures is that they are so small and shaped so that you can stack them on top of each other. So you can have HUNDREDS of these babies and they still only take up a small portion of space. Each small plush cost less than $10, too, so they never felt like a splurge.

Star 1 Store Tsum Tsums and Plush Dolls

There was also a Tsum Tsums subscription service that you could sign up for on shopDisney and get a collection of Tsum Tsums EVERY MONTH. Almost every Disney character in existence ended up as a Tsum Tsums toy at some point. They also spawned two mobile games: Disney Tsum Tsum and Marvel Tsum Tsum.

Wishables

Wishables are the new Tsum Tsums, and we’ll have to admit that, yes, we’re obsessed with them. First, most of them come in mystery packs, so you might know what movie or franchise they’re from, but you don’t know what character plush you’ll get. Which means if you want a full set, you just have to keep buying mystery packs until you get them all — clever, Disney, clever.

Beauty and the Beast Wishables

You CAN buy certain Wishables outside of the mystery pack, but others are only available if you’re willing to try out your luck. We’ve seen some adorable Wishables sets, including one dedicated to the emotions of Inside Out.

Inside Out Wishables

But Disney tugged at our heartstrings when it released the Aladdin Wishables set and donated proceeds from the sales of those Wishables to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Like, now we HAVE to buy ALL of them!

Wishables are also relatively affordable and go for just $9.99 per plush or mystery pack. No wonder so many people have jumped on this trend to collect them! Now, nuiMOs are coming to shopDisney and we’re preparing our pocketbooks.

Glow With The Show/Made With Magic

Back before the Disney Parks closed, there were all kinds of great nighttime entertainment options, and you could get merchandise called Glow With The Show (later referred to as Made with Magic) that let you become PART of the show.

That sounds pretty fun, right? You could get interactive light-up wands, ears, Mickey hands, and even sippers that responded by changing colors and flickering to things that happened in the show.

And it WAS a lot of fun having your ears light up along with something like World of Color at Disneyland and IllumiNations at Disney World’s EPCOT. Of course, once you got those things home, their magic light powers were useless, but whatevs — it was a good time while it lasted!

However, you could always bring them back to Disney Parks to use again, so there’s that. So why not collect them all?

Here’s how the Magic Kingdom makes light-up cotton candy!

Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Collections

2020 saw monthly drops of AMAZING new merch in a collection called Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction, the premise being that the merch was based around Minnie Mouse and a different Disney Parks attraction every month.

And this collection FLEW off shelves, both at Disney World and online. We would occasionally see a restock online, but those would sell out quickly, too!

Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Jungle Cruise Merch

But everything about this collection was so unique, and the theming like Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and even Nighttime Castle and Fireworks Finale, is what kept us coming back for more each month! This year, Disney is answering to this collection with the new Stitch Crashes Disney merchandise series.

Vinylmation

Remember Disney Vinylmation figures? They were little plastic figurines shaped like Mickey Mouse, but resembled a Disney character, food, or attraction. They usually cost around $10 and, like Wishables, came mostly in mystery boxes so you didn’t know what you had until you opened them.

Kingdom of Cute Box

So the idea was that you would have to buy a ton of boxes to get a full set — there’s Disney’s clever marketing at work again.

Food themed Vinylmations

We were especially drawn to the Kingdom of Cute Vinylmation collection that included such notable Disney Parks icons, like Cinderella Castle, Dole Whip, a Haunted Mansion gargoyle, and Space Mountain.

Cute Space Mountain

But the rising popularity of Funko Pop seemed to overtake the Vinylmation trend, but that’s why they’re trends in the first place — they eventually go away and get replaced by something else (and now we’re collecting Disney Funko Pops).

Happy Meal Glasses

Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, Disney teamed up with McDonald’s for some Disney-themed glasses (yes, REAL glass) that came with Happy Meals. And some Disney fans (okay, it’s us — it’s totally us) started collecting them all! There was even a full set to celebrate the new Millennium in the year 2000!

We don’t get glasses with Happy Meals anymore (mostly, it’s just toys), but some of us still have a set of glasses with Mickey and Minnie sitting in attics and basements (although we’ve seen these turn up on eBay, Etsy, and Amazon, too).

Those glasses were fun to collect, and they were useful, too!
