Over 37,000 Disney Fans Voted on if ‘Frozen’ is a Christmas Movie. Here’s What They Decided.
We’ve been really enjoying the Christmas season so much already, with beautiful decorations, cool seasonal merchandise, yummy holiday snacks, and of course, CHRISTMAS MOVIES!
And that includes watching Frozen, although there seems to be some debate out there. Does this flick count as a Christmas movie or not!
Frozen was initially released on November 27th, 2013, and tells the story of two sisters who live in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle. They’ve lost their parents, and the oldest, Elsa, is about to take the throne as the new Queen of Arendelle. But Elsa was born with ice powers that she doesn’t know how to control which eventually leads her to a life of exile.
However, through sisterly love, the day is saved, and Elsa returns to Arendelle to take her proper place as Queen (at least in the first movie. Gotta watch Frozen 2 for the latest! ).
The thing is, Frozen was released JUST in time for the holiday film season, and it is a movie quite literally centered around ICE, so it makes sense that many people think of it as a Christmas movie…or NOT! Many people choose to watch it this time of year (or, if you have kids like us, still basically once every few days since…oh…2013). But is Frozen REALLY a Christmas movie? We asked our readers and got a whopping 37,000 responses!
No! Frozen is not a Christmas movie
Almost overwhelmingly, most of our readers seemed to believe that Frozen is not, in fact, a Christmas movie. In fact, 15,523 of you said NO WAY (76%). So why not? One reader said: “It’s literally set in the middle of summer…they actually SAY, ‘Let’s go bring back summer.’ Summer does not equal Christmas.”
Another reader agreed: “It literally is about summer freezing over.” Yikes, that’s a strong case to make there! Honestly, we can kinda agree! There’s literally a song called “In Summer!”
Frozen is definitely a Christmas movie
Other readers disagreed: 4,807 (24%) believe that yes, Frozen is indeed a Christmas movie. According to one of our readers: “Christmas deals with snow, and Frozen has snow so seems like a Christmas movie.”
Another reader argued by using another Christmas movie as an example: “If Die Hard qualifies as a Christmas movie, then Frozen more than qualifies!!!” (We’d like to point out that movie DOES take place during the company CHRISTMAS party at Nakitomi Tower but we see their point!)
So it seems that most people don’t believe that Frozen is a Christmas movie, but even those who voted “no,” reiterated they would watch it around the holidays anyway, which means that we’ve all pretty much sort of adopted it as an honorary Christmas movie, right?? And that counts — whether you like to sip egg nog and eat gingerbread while you sing “Let It Go” or not.
Thanks to everyone who responded: stay tuned because we’ll have more pressing questions for you soon!
