NEWS: Florida Mayor Urges The CDC To Not Extend No-Sail Order For Cruise Ships

As Disney World has continued to move forward with its re-opening procedures, other parts of the Disney company haven’t seen as much progress. Namely, the Disney Cruise Line has been closed since March and has continued to delay its re-opening.

While there are a few clues about what it will take for cruise lines to open, the CDC has been taking precautions by issuing a No Sail Order until the end of this month. However, just like the theme park industry, cruise lines are looking to re-open soon to welcome guests back on board.

The Royal Caribbean Blog has reported that Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez has asked that the CDC doesn’t extend the No Sail order again after its expiration on September 30th.

Recently, many cruise lines have started to put health and safety procedures in place ahead of their re-openings. But Disney Cruise Line has extended its cancellations through mid-December and announced that its sailings will be the last business to return for the company.

Ahead of Mayor Gimenez’s statement, the Miami-Dade County Commission moved to pass a resolution “to expedite and conclude any analysis necessary for the establishment of the public health guidance and preventative measures required prior to the resumption of travel on cruise ships.”

The mayor responded directly to the CDC, saying, “Now that the cruise industry has adopted the mandatory core elements, I urge the CDC to not extend or renew the ‘No Sail Order.'” Part of the “mandatory core elements” that Mayor Gimenez has proposed to make up the new health and safety measures of cruise lines include:

  • 100% testing of passengers and crew for COVID-19 prior to embarkation
  • Mandatory wearing of masks by all passengers and crew onboard
  • Physical distancing in terminals, onboard ships, on private islands and during shore excursions.
  • Air management and ventilation strategies to increase fresh air onboard and, where feasible, using enhanced filters and other technologies to mitigate risk.
  • Dedicated cabin capacity for isolation and other operational measures, and arrangements with private providers for shoreside quarantine, medical facilities and transportation.
