Disney Confirms That the Star Wars Hotel, Avengers Campus, and Runaway Railway Are Still a Go

Last week, Disney participated in a virtual conference and gave some insight about the future of the Disney resorts, cruise line, Disney+, and more.

Check out what one Disney executive had to say about what Disney Parks projects will be moving forward with construction in the parks.

On September 10th, Christine McCarthy — Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company — participated in a question-and-answer session at the Bank of America Virtual 2020 Media, Communications, & Entertainment Conference.

When discussing the future of Disney’s theme parks, McCarthy noted that Disney is investing in and will continue to invest in its theme parks.

Before the park closures, Disney had announced and started on quite a few new construction projects for attractions and experiences at many of its theme parks. But, what construction projects will still be moving forward at this time?

McCarthy spoke a bit about that during the conference. She said that while Disney will continue to invest in the parks, the investments will be prioritized to continue certain projects that were already “in flight.” McCarthy specifically noted, “Ones that we are really focused on are things like Star Wars hotel…that will be in Walt Disney World….completion of the Avengers Campus in Disneyland, as well as Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway which is also a priority project for Disneyland.”

1. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is an immersive Star Wars experience that is currently being built in Disney World. While its often referred to as the “Star Wars Hotel” it’s not really a hotel — it’s an all-inclusive, cruise-ship-like, lock-down experience. As part of this experience, guests will live out their own Star Wars story during a 2-day, 2-night stay aboard the “intergalactic cruise ship” called the Halcyon.

During your stay about the Halcyon, you’ll get to meet and interact with Star Wars characters, tour the bridge, wield a lightsaber against a training remote, and so much more. There will even be a “land excursion” available to Black Spire Outpost in Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the construction of this area for a while now. Currently, the Disney World website notes that guests will be able to go on this special adventure in 2021.

Reservations were also scheduled to become available later this year. As this is a project that is being prioritized, we expect to continue to see construction moving forward and more news to be released as 2021 approaches.

2. Avengers Campus

During the conference, McCarthy specifically noted that the completion of the Avengers Campus in Disneyland’s Disney California Adventure is one of the projects being prioritized.

Avengers Campus is a Marvel-themed area that will feature 2 brand new rides, an Ant-Man and The Wasp-themed restaurant, retail locations, and lots more! You’ll also get to meet TONS of your favorite superheroes.

Prior to the park closures, Avengers Campus was slated to open in Disney California Adventure on July 18th, 2020. The website has since been updated to simply state that the new area is “coming soon,” so we aren’t sure when the new opening date will be, but we have seen some progress made in the area.

We’ve seen various casting calls sent out recently for stunt performers, which could mean that this area is one step closer to being ready to open.We also shared recently that the Quinjet has already landed in Avengers Campus.

So, even though we still don’t have an opening date for Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, it definitely looks like things have been moving forward with this project.

3. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Disneyland

Finally, McCarthy noted that the construction of the West Coast Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway over in Disneyland’s ToonTown was also among the list of projects being prioritized.

Welcome to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway!

The attraction will be the first Mickey-themed ride-through attraction in Disneyland Park. Guests hop aboard a train conducted by Goofy and go straight into the world of a Mickey Mouse cartoon short. Lots of hilarious and fun things happen throughout your journey and you’ll encounter lots of your favorite characters along the way, including Goofy, Mickey, Minnie, and Daisy.

The attraction opened in Walt Disney World at Disney’s Hollywood Studios earlier this year, and we’ve been able to experience it lots of times (but beware: that theme song is very catchy!) and check out all of the cute merchandise themed to this new ride!

When the attraction was officially announced at the D23 Expo in 2019, the target opening date for Disneyland’s version of this ride was 2022.

Even though we’ve seen construction progressing, the opening date has been delayed to 2023.

Other parks projects, like Space 220, EPCOT’s Play! Pavilion, and the TRON attraction, were not specifically listed by McCarthy as being on the priority list. But, we’ve seen construction progressing by some of these spots. We’ve also seen construction moving forward for other projects like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, both of which are in EPCOT.

We’re excited to see all of these projects one they’re finalized, and we’re interested to see what new projects Disney announces in the future. We’ll definitely be on the lookout for more updates and let you know what we find!
