News! Walt Disney World To Donate Excess Food During Temporary Closure Due to Coronavirus Concerns

On Monday, March 16th, the four Walt Disney World theme parks will begin a temporary closure through the end of the month in light of concerns about the Coronavirus.

This will follow the closure of the Disneyland Resort parks — Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure — which went into effect today. And now Disney has just announced that Walt Disney World is echoing Disneyland in another significant way: Walt Disney World Resort will be donating excess food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Disney states: “To help other Central Floridians in need during this time, Walt Disney World Resort will donate excess food inventory like fresh salads, greens and expertly cooked hot items to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, as part of the ongoing Disney Harvest program.”

Disney shares that the program — which was launched in 1991 — collects excess and unserved food from Walt Disney World locations and delivers it to feeding programs throughout Central Florida. “The Disney Harvest Program at Walt Disney World Resort collects and distributes more than 823,000 pounds of prepared, unserved food annually and supports Second Harvest’s work serving more than 40 Orlando-area nonprofits.  In the last year alone, these donations provided one million meals to people in need.”

Additionally, Disney supports Second Harvest Food Bank with monetary contributions and the Disney VoluntEARS program (whereby Cast Members volunteer their time with food collection, sorting, and distribution). Second Harvest Food Bank is also the “celebrated charity” of November’s runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend. Excess food from the post-race snack boxes provided to participants is donated and distributed to the Food Bank.
