Six Things You Need to Change About Your Disney World Trip This Year!

Over the next few years, you will see some major changes coming to Disney World in preparation for the resort’s 50th Anniversary in 2021. In anticipation of these new experiences, there may be a few changes you want to make if you are planning on visiting in 2020.

Note that you may not be able to make these changes juuuust quite yet. As of this writing, reservations are not available for many of next year’s new attractions and restaurants (but check back with DFB often — you know we’ll let you know as soon as they do!). With that said, here are a few things you will want to consider changing when the time comes!

Change Your Expectations

This is a big one, guys. With all the exciting changes coming to Disney World, unfortunately, that means the evil necessity of construction — lots of construction.

TRON Coaster Construction

This will be most obvious in the front half of Epcot, which is perhaps experiencing the MOST amount of change over the next couple of years. Epcot will be getting an almost complete redesign of Future World as well as new restaurants, attractions, and more!

Beyond that, we have spotted construction around the entrance to Magic Kingdom as well as back in Tomorrowland, where the TRON Lightcycle Run coaster is rising up. In the France Pavilion of World Showcase, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure nears completion as well as the new Creperie, and soon we should expect the UK Pavilion to begin work on the new Mary Poppins attraction!

Construction Walls Everywhere!

Most of Disney World, including the vast majority of Epcot, is still very much operational and accessible during construction — just be prepared to see lots of those lovely construction walls! Yes, it can be a bummer to see picturesque Disney World under construction, but it really shouldn’t affect your experience if you don’t let it. Most rides and dining options are just as open as ever and more new spots will begin to open as the year unfolds! So hang in there, walk past the construction, and continue to enjoy your day (you ARE in Disney World, after all!)

Change How Much Time You Plan on Spending in Disney Springs

If you haven’t spent much time in Disney Springs in the last few years, you’ll have plenty of reasons to do so in 2020! Beyond the incredible restaurants and shopping, there’s a really exciting new entertainment offering from Cirque du Soleil opening soon!

It was announced at D23 this past August that a NEW Cirque du Soleil show would replace long-time favorite La Nouba, which closed at the end of 2017. This new show will be named Drawn to Life and will be inspired by Disney animation. Previews for the show begin on March 20, 2020 with an official opening on April 17, 2020! Tickets are on sale NOW!

And, of course, Disney Springs is adding even more restaurants to its lineup. In 2020 we’ll see the opening of a second Ample Hills Creamery location, as well as the opening of Beatrix, a new healthy restaurant with lots of grab and go options for guests in the Springs!

VERY soon (like, any day now!) City Works Eatery and Pour House will be opening next to the NBA Experience in Disney Springs.

This spot will boast 100 draft beers on tap, 8 wines on tap, as well as lots of tasty dining options (hellooo fried cheese!).

Change Your Dining Plans and Reservations

We aren’t talking about changing your Disney Dining Plan, but rather your actual plan of attack when it comes to picking which restaurants you and your party will want to visit. There’s a few mega exciting additions coming to Disney World’s dining scene this year you’ll definitely want on your radar!

Space 220

Over in Epcot, Space 220 will be like no other dining experience Disney World has to offer. With its unique entrance experience that will rocket you 220 miles above Earth, an extensive wine list, and a lounge, this will be the must-visit restaurant next year.

Reservations and a menu are still not available despite news that Space 220 is expected to open in early 2020. As always, if you can’t get a reservation, keep checking back because people’s plans often change AND with a lounge coming, there may be an opportunity to grab a quick bite!

Rodeo Roundup BBQ

Another highly anticipated restaurant set to open in late 2020 is Roundup Rodeo BBQ. It’s been a while since this location was first announced, yet little is known about this restaurant coming to Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Seeing as this is a much-needed addition to Hollywood Studio’s relatively small dining scene, we can imagine reservations will be tough to come by for this restaurant as well.

Regal Eagle Smokehouse: Crafts, Drafts, and Barbeque

And if you find yourself in World Showcase over in Epcot, the newest dining location coming to the America Pavilion sounds promising! Regal Eagle was set to open December 2019, but is still showing signs of final construction. This spot is a quick-service location, so it should be relatively easy to try out if you plan to!

You can grab craft beers, barbeque, and handcrafted burgers (some served on garlic toast!) at this location and chill out on the extensive planned patio!

Change your FastPass+ plans

Disney World is about to experience a bit of an attraction ‘boom’ over the next few years and we can’t complain! The opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was just the beginning! This year, of course, saw the opening of two mega-watt E-ticket attractions: Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run and Rise of the Resistance.

Keep in mind that Smuggler’s Run and Rise of the Resistance, still do not offer FastPass+ reservations. As of its opening day, Rise of the Resistance has relied on a virtual queue to assist guests in determining what time they will get to ride (that is IF they manage to get a boarding group to ride!).

2020 looks like it will be another hit year when it comes to new attractions. And if you have little ones in your party, you will definitely want to consider changing your FastPass+ plans when the time comes for 2 new attractions opening in 2020!

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is set to open on March 4, 2020 at Hollywood Studios. Moving into the former home of the Great Movie Ride (RIP!), this attraction is the first Disney parks ride to actually star Mickey Mouse himself.

Guests will get to take a trip through an all-new Mickey Mouse cartoon! No word yet on whether or not FastPass+ will be available or how it will factor into Hollywood Studio’s Tiered FastPass System, but if it is you’ll want to hop on those ASAP!

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

Another fun ride for the whole family is Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, set to open in summer 2020 in the France Pavilion in Epcot. This ‘trackless’ dark ride originally opened in Disneyland Paris and we can’t wait for it to arrive in Florida!

While there are plenty of new experiences to look forward to, there are also some refurbishments and downtimes to be aware of next year as well. If you are a fan of Spaceship Earth like we are, you will need to adjust your Epcot plans sometime in the future! Our “Grand and miraculous spaceship” will be closing for a chunk of time sometime in the future.

Unfortunately, after the D23 announcement that it would be getting a major renovation, no details about when or how long of a renovation were revealed! We will all have to keep waiting to see when this iconic attraction closes its doors for a while (please keep Rome burning!).

Also note that the Walt Disney World Railroad continues to remain closed during construction of the new Tron attraction, which is slated to open in 2021.

Change Your Hotel Reservation!

If you REALLY want to make a major change to your trip next year, consider being among the first guests to stay at one of Disney World’s newest resorts.

Disney’s Riviera Resort is the newest Disney Resort, opening just a few weeks back on December 16th. Sitting along the Skyliner route, this new DVC resort features a grand European design with modern amenities, not to mention amazing FOOD!

The resort has the delightful Le Petit Cafe that serves up pastries and coffee in the morning and wine and desserts in the evening. There’s also Primo Piatto, the resort’s quick-service location, and Bar Riva, their fantastic pool bar (which serves up an epic Monte Cristo!).

The resort’s flagship rooftop restaurant, Topolino’s Terrace — Flavors of the Riviera, has an incredible character breakfast starring Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy in their artistic finest.

And a knocked-our-socks-off signature dinner featuring handmade pasta, thoughtfully prepared entrees, and phenomenal service.

Seriously, this meal was so good, we can not wait to go back! This resort really blew us away with how beautiful and well thought out it was.

Gran Destino Tower at Coronado Springs Resort

If you want to shake up your plans but still looking for value, the new Gran Destino Tower at Coronado Springs might fit the bill! This moderate new hotel tower opened this past summer, and features a deluxe feel for the price of a moderate resort.

The resort had an adjoining convention center, making it incredibly convenient for guests traveling for business as well. Plus, the new tower offers great dining as well!

Toledo

For those looking for an adult drink, they offer an espresso and gin tonic bar, Barcelona Lounge, as well as the rooftop lounge, the Dahlia Lounge. Toledo — Tapas, Steaks, and Seafood is their main restaurant, featuring Spanish inspired fare, and we greatly enjoyed our meal here (umm…savory churros, guys!).

Whether you want to stay in the newest resorts, or you’re simply looking for new places to resort hop to, it seems there’s always something new to check out at Disney World.

Change How You Get Around Property!

Disney continues to add and improve complimentary transportation options for their guests. If you’re visiting in 2020, be sure to check out the new Skyliner transportation system.

We’ve also spotted a ton of newly decked-out buses around Disney World! Many of these buses have really fun character wraps, USB charging ports, upgraded interiors, and even free wi-fi!

These wraps and additions make cruise round Disney World by bus even more enjoyable.
