Menu Preview and Food Photos: Is This What We Can Expect At City Works, Coming Soon to Disney Springs?
Since the announcement that Disney Springs’ West Side would be getting a City Works Eatery & Pour House, we’ve been eagerly awaiting more information about the franchise’s American-style eats and dozens of craft beers. (Click here for the original announcement!)
City Works currently operates seven locations throughout the country, and many of the chain’s signature menu items are replicated in multiple locations. So we visited one such locale to sample some of the eats that might be coming to the Disney Springs location. Note that the menu has not been announced for Disney Springs at press time, but since so many of the menus around the country feature the same items, we’re guessing some of them will come to Disney World as well!
Here’s our menu preview — complete with some tantalizing food photos that will make you impatient for this spot to open its doors this summer!
Atmosphere
We haven’t been inside the Disney Springs City Works location, but the other City Works locations are relaxed and welcoming. We expect Disney Springs will bring more of the same.
Seating at the City Works we visited includes long banquettes, padded chairs, and tables in shades of light brown that verge on bronze or copper at times. Disney World has announced that its location will have “plenty of indoor seating [and] a large outdoor patio,” but the specifics of the interior and exterior design remain to be seen.
The centerpiece of the restaurant space is a long bar, and because City Works is a “pour house,” we anticipate the Disney Springs location will likewise feature at least one bar with seating and space for beer tap after beer tap after beer tap. (More of these in a bit!)
Disney has announced that their City Works will have “gigantic high-definition TVs and state-of-the-art A/V (audio/visual)” so diners will never miss a goal, a touchdown, homerun, an ace — whatever the sporting event may be!
Eats
City Works offers similar menus in all of the chain’s locations, including the showcase: tons of beers on tap. City Works Eatery & Pour House in Disney Springs will feature “90+ local and global varieties of beer on tap” — all the better to wash down a burger and some fries if you ask us!
At the location we previewed, beers are displayed on one wall of the restaurant and are categorized into Wheats, Belgians, Pale Ales and IPAs, Ciders, Stouts and Porters, Macro-Brews, Strong and Imperial Brews, Fruited and Sours, Lighter Lagers, and Rotating.
If you think this is intense (it is!), be sure to talk to your server about what you should choose.
We’re excited to see what local beer offerings the Disney Springs location will serve as we do tend to see some local breweries featured at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival as well as the Swan & Dolphin Food and Wine Classic.
To absorb all those tasty brews, City Works serves “classic American food with chef-driven twists.” At this location (and the others) this translates into appetizers for one, shareable apps, burgers, salads, entrees, desserts, and more. (We kind of dug the original EPCOT Center font on this menu.)
We tried, you know, a few things. As we do. Even when we’re not at Disney and we’re just jonesing to preview some potential forthcoming eats.
From Bar Bites we went for two crowd pleasers that we’re hoping will appear on the Disney Springs’ City Works menu: Pretzel Bites and Cheese Curds. These aren’t listed under “To Share,” but you’ll likely want to. These are some healthy portion sizes. (Maybe that’s the American twist…)
We do love a Pretzel Bite (we’ve been dunking Pretzel Bread into Cheddar Cheese Soup at Le Cellier for the better part of a decade, eh!), and these come with a cup of really rich and flavorful Gouda Cheese Sauce!
The Bites themselves are deep brown and slightly crunchy on the outside (with a generous sprinkling of salt!).
Inside: pillowy carb pretzel heaven. It does seem to be begging for some cheese sauce, though…
Who are we to deny a Pretzel Bite a savory little dunk into some cheese sauce? In you go!
These are super satisfying to eat, and while we already mentioned that you might choose to share these, honestly, they’re easy to eat, and you might plow through more of them you think! Still, if the Pretzel Bites are available at the Disney Springs location, try to save room for the entree round.
In addition to ball of carbohydrates, the menu we previewed also offers fried Cheese Curds!!! (These require three exclamation points.) These were marked as a City Works “house favorite,” which I’m guessing means it’s likely we’ll see this coming to Disney Springs.
These are cheddar cheese curds fried in cornmeal batter. If they or something like them make the cut in Florida, don’t hesitate: order the fried cheese.
The batter was relatively light, especially considering that they’re filled with ooey, gooey melted cheddar cheese curds!
And the cheese pull?
The Smoked Tomato Coulis was a slight twist on tomato sauce and was a good accompaniment, but I’m not a huge fan of the “smoked” flavor trend around at the moment, so I wasn’t loving the sauce.
Again, you might want to share the Cheese Curds because they’re FRIED CHEESE CURDS and will weigh you down. But if you horde them for yourself, we will not judge.
On the To Share part of this restaurant’s menu, we opted for Buffalo Chicken Dip. This is a large portion of dip with a generous helping of sturdy tortilla chips.
The Buffalo Chicken Dip we previewed is a combo of pulled Buffalo chicken, bleu cheese cream, and housemade giardiniera (marinated vegetables). The City Works location we visited noted that this app is gluten free.
We typically enjoy Buffalo chicken of any type (although it’s rarely spicy enough for us!), and we’ve even had Buffalo chicken dip elsewhere in Walt Disney World (we’ve spotted it at the Restaurantosaurus Lounge in Animal Kingdom). But this incarnation was served up warm — and what a difference that makes! This was flavorful and creamy, and there really wasn’t too much spice to it at all. So no worries if you’re spice-averse.
Our first entree is a classic beer buddy: the Smokehouse Burger. The Smokehouse Burger starts with a patty comprised of a brisket/short rib mix, and it’s further topped with slices of braised short rib!
Other toppings include smoked provolone, BBQ bacon onion relish (!!), Carolina mustard BBQ sauce, and crispy buttermilk onion strings.
This burger is super savory; the only sweetness comes from the BBQ bacon onion relish, but its sweet impact is very mild in relation to the other ingredients. The vinegar-y Carolina mustard BBQ sauce is a delicious addition that adds a hit of contrasting acidity.
It’s messy. It’s heavy. It’s totally awesome, and we want another one right now. Sadly the fries were meh, but dip ’em in that leftover gouda cheese sauce from the pretzel bites and they get a lot better.
But if you can believe it, the next entree we previewed really gives the Smokehouse Burger a run for its money. These are Filet Mignon Sliders!
Served on pretzel rolls (rather than the brioche of the Smokehouse Burger), this duo of sliders is delicious. These are two grilled filet medallions seasoned so well and topped with caramelized onions and a generous portion of horseradish cream.
Did we mention these are delicious? They are. The horseradish cream is a classic steak accompaniment, and it really works here to cut through some of the richness brought by the filets. You can’t go wrong with the Filet Mignon Sliders if they appear on the Disney Springs menu. Which we sincerely hope is the case. (Pretty please with a pretzel roll on top?) Note that these were also a “house favorite” as indicated on the menu, so fingers crossed!
Of the plated entrees we considered at this City Works location, we opted for the Pork Chop. This classic American dish really does get a chef-y twist here with some stellar chipotle-maple glaze. (Chipotle and maple, you ask, how can this work? But it so does!)
In addition to the glaze (like, who needs anything else, but bear with us…) is savory potato puree, cinnamon spiced apples, and buttermilk onion rings. The meat itself is a 10-ounce bone-in center cut pork chop, so this really isn’t for the faint of heart.
Unfortunately the Pork Chop we previewed was slightly over-cooked and tough (a common issue with pork in restaurants since it usually needs to be cooked to a higher internal temperature), but… we forgive this mild sin because when we got a perfect bite with a little bit of everything, the richness and balance of flavors were truly redemptive.
For dessert, we went with a peanut butter and chocolate combination, as we are often wont to do. This time it’s Peanut Butter Snickers Pie. And before we move onto the components, we just need to give an enthusiastic shout-out to the salted caramel sauce on the plate. This, our friends, is not just decorative. You’re going to want some of it in every bite!
The other components include some real superstars, too: Oreo cookie crust, a not-too-thin peanut butter mousse, whipped cream, and chopped Snickers. It’s possible that we’ve never met a PB&C dessert we didn’t at least want to be pals with, but this peanut butter mousse? Yeah, we want this in our lives as often as possible.
The chopped Snickers helps to drive home that candy bar feel, but the peanut butter mousse and salted caramel sauce really dominate the dessert. And that’s a-okay with us because YUM. And that Oreo cookie crust was a big benefit in flavor (a tiny bit of salt) and texture, so get a bit of that in every bite if you can, too.
We wouldn’t be mad if the Disney Springs location included this on the menu, either. Are you seeing a trend here?
Overall
Obviously we haven’t been inside the Disney Springs City Works location yet, but based on our experience at this chain location, we’re really looking forward to the opening later this summer! The food was terrific, hearty, satisfying, and (as expected) perfect to pair with some craft brews. The atmosphere seems like a good fit for Disney Springs as well, with a laid-back and relaxed vibe that makes it a great place to head with the fam. Plus, with all those big screens comin’ in hot, it may become a go-to spot to catch sporting events while you’re on vacation.
So stay tuned as we keep you updated on the progress of City Works (we’re always strolling by during our Disney Springs What’s New walks!) and take you inside just as soon as the doors open to diners!
