Happy Birthday, Lucy! Join In On Celebrating the Famous Elephant in Disney World!
We may all love Dumbo, but there’s another older elephant in town!
The BoardWalk Inn‘s waterside, Coney Island-style decor takes notes from places like Atlantic City. The atmosphere, the culture, and history are all part of what makes this Disney resort so unique. The BoardWalk even makes a nod to America’s oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction, Lucy the Elephant! Right now you can join in celebrating Lucy’s 138th birthday!
On July 20th, 1881, Lucy the Elephant was built in order to attract tourists and property buyers alike. Her majestic 6-story structure of wood and tin was created by James V. Lafferty and became a beloved part of Margate City, NJ.
At one point, she was possibly going to be torn down. However, the city’s inhabitants came together to donate to a “Save Lucy” campaign, so they could preserve their lovely piece of history. Lucy still stands in New Jersey today.
Disney currently has a miniature version of the elephant in the BoardWalk Inn’s lobby.
The celebration of her birthday consists of a commemorative signed frame and photos of the original Lucy in the BoardWalk Inn lobby. What a way to honor past memories and establish new ones with family and friends!
Maybe you can celebrate even more by trying the Elephant Cupcake!
