Review! Candy Sushi Class at the 2018 Epcot Food and Wine Festival!
The new Candy Sushi class is among several family-friendly offerings making its debut at the 2018 Epcot Food and Wine Festival!
Offered daily throughout the Festival — which just kicked off on August 30th and runs through November 12th — this event is held in Sunshine Seasons, which is located in The Land Pavilion in Epcot. It’s presented by Skittles® and Adventures by Disney.
Pre-registered guests (we’ll talk about Advance Dining Reservations for this event a little later) sit down to find the Candy Sushi makings and equipment at each seat.
There are three types of Candy Sushi to learn… and you’ll want to keep these in mind because you’ll have a choice to make. You (or your little one) may choose to make the Dynamite Twix Roll as one option.
Your other option is the Taste the Rainbow Roll.
Then every guest gets to make the Candy ForYa Roll, so everyone makes two in total.
After the choices are made, a Manager instructs the class while kind Cast Members walk around to help participants.
Something to note and that will hopefully be improved is that it was somewhat hard to hear the instructor, and a microphone would provide a solution.
Moving forward, the Taste the Rainbow Roll is rolled with fruit leather pressed around a rectangle of flattened rice krispy treats.
Gummy worms and Skittles (for tasting that rainbow!) are placed in the center.
And the makusi mat on the table helps to roll the “rice” and leather roll around the candy. (Remember, Cast Members are walking around to offer assistance, too, if this seems a bit difficult for little hands!)
TADA!!!
Then it’s time to slice up the roll (“with the help of an adult,” as the recipe reminds) to complete your sushi!
Making the Candy ForYa Roll is a different process, resulting in a nigiri-style candy sushi.
Hence the Swedish Fish on top (as opposed to tuna, shrimp, or salmon ).
It’s a cute and clever sweet treat!
At the end of the class, everyone receives a few things: a very handy (no pun intended) wet wipe as well as an offer for your Sushi to be saran-wrapped in its paper boats so you can take your culinary creations home.
Candy Sushi Information
Some logistics: the event allows parents to sit behind their participating children in the nearby booths if the children are registered. Though the parents in this instance are not participating or receiving candy, they are welcome to come and sit while their child participates. (The hosts are trying to keep the limit to two parents or extra family members per participating children.) Registered adults, though, are also welcome in the class, as our DFB representative who made our sushi is one . (Thanks, Tina, for being the only adult-without-child in the class! ;-D)
Candy Sushi is offered daily at 3:30 and 5:30 PM throughout the run of the Festival, and Advance Dining Reservations for this complimentary event may be made online or by calling (407) 939-3378. Note that this event is mostly full, but it’s worth it to keep checking for cancellations. (The class, while free, requires a credit card guarantee so guests are less inclined to be no-shows to avoid penalty fees; so catching a cancellation may be more possible than you think.)
More Family-Friendly Fun
Candy Sushi is just one of the many kid-and-family friendly options at this year’s Food & Wine Festival. The new Disney Du Jour Character Dance Party will take place on Friday and Saturday evenings in Future World, and the Festival Center will present the new complimentary Junior Chef Kitchen by Krusteaz on select Sundays. Guests stopping by Taste Track during the Festival will spot the new Ralph Breaks the Internet Family Play Zone.
And Taste Track, in addition several other Food Booths around the Festival, is serving up Kid-Approved food and drink items that were created specifically with kids in mind.
And, of course, Remy’s Hide & Squeak Scavenger Hunt is available for families to play again this year.
