NEW: Kylo Ren and BB-9E Cupcakes at Backlot Express in Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is, as you know, undergoing a tremendous expansion. Toy Story Land opens in one month (on June 30), and we recently learned that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open in late fall 2019! And don’t forget those brand new details about this incredible new land!
If you’re itching to get a taste of the Star Wars fun at Hollywood Studios, Backlot Express has had your back for years with a menu featuring Star Wars-themed eats!

And who can forget this rock-in’ BB-8 Cupcake? We loved this combo of lemon cake and vanilla buttercream!
But when BB-8 and Darth Vader Cupcakes disappeared recently, they were replaced with two updated characters: Kylo Ren and BB-9E!
These cupcakes feature lots of tasty details, so let’s dig in and see if the Force is strong with these two.
We’ll start with hot-tempered Kylo Ren, who reigns supreme in chocolate and peanut butter! (This replaces the chocolate and peanut butter goodness that was the Darth Vader Cupcake!)
From all angles, this one is interesting. The black sprinkles and red drizzle (neither adds to the flavor at all — just texture and appearance!) are particularly ominous.
The frosting? Peanut Butter Buttercream. Yesssss, please. We will follow you anywhere, Kylo Ren!
Kylo Ren’s likeness is crafted from chocolate and somehow captures his cold stoicism.
The cake is rich, super-moist chocolate, so dense as to be almost brownie-like. We enjoyed it, but if you prefer a light and fluffy cake, this might not be your jam. But peanut butter and chocolate dessert fans (like us!) will definitely want to procure one of these delights!
Feelin’ a little lighter (at least in terms of cake)? The BB-9E Cupcake is vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream.
This one has plenty of texture, with black, white, and silver sugar pearls and some white cookie crumble (that reminds us of a Golden Oreo).
The cake is super moist and light, which is a nice texture contrast with the toppings.
BB-9E is printed on white chocolate, so it adds a little bit of texture and flavor. But it’s nothing to write to your home galaxy about.
We do love that buttercream-to-cake ratio, though! So. Much. Buttercream. But we miss those candy rocks and the light lemon flavor that BB-8 offered.
Kylo Ren and BB-9E are each $5.99 (or a DDP snack credit!), and we love that they’re both so different and yet both completely satisfying. Summon one yourself, and let us know which one you prefer!
